I heard fingernail polish is temporary because it flakes off too easily. I believe it, since I've used it for other purposes over the years and I don't remember it lasting on any surface I used it on. One youtuber says he just puts it back on after it flakes off, but why would you risk that when you might need those sights in an emergency?

I've heard others say Testers paint, I assume they're talking about their enamel paint I used to use on modelling projects I built as a youngster.

I see that MNSIG recommended fishing lure paint a while back in 2017, said it was the most durable option he'd used. I remember using it on a front rifle bead, because I just found the bottle, but it's long dried out.

And do you think White is the best all around color, I heard a Sigforum poster say white has the most all around visibility.

In that same thread some guys are saying single coat of white Testers paint, then two coats of Testors florescent orange.

Or maybe automobile touch up paint ? I think those tubes are mostly acrylic, though I don't know much bout that type of paint except that muscle car builders used acrylic before modern clear coats were invented.

Would dedicated sights paint be best from one of the major gun suppliers like Brownells or Midway ?

Or maybe sight paint is like grease, as in the famous Sigforum line, "just use some damn grease !" if you've run out of slide-glyde.

The front sight on my J sucks, though I don't remember it sucking this bad, but I've had it a long time.

What say you ?

I use the Testers paint.

I've used Rust-Oleum Specialty Appliance Epoxy with great success.

Had a white car several years back. Still have the touch up paint bottle they gave me and I use that when I need to brighten a front site. So far, no problems with the paint flaking off

Brite-Sites.....comes in different colors. Works great!

Since the late '60s, I have "painted" my J-Frame front sights with yellow fingernail polish. Did the same with Model 10 Smiths and other similar revolvers.

I admit I got some strange looks from the clerks at the drug stores when I purchased the nail polish, but a bottle lasts a loooong time and there are many drug stores. Lots of guys on my PD did the same with their revolvers.

I like yellow as it seems to jump out at me when I raise and post the gun. Some guys preferred red for the same reason.

Model Master has an orangey-red that I like better than Testors red.

I tried Brite Sight and the one I got was kind of pastel, not a big help.

Especially for those guns that have a solid black front ramp or night sites, I have used Tulip Slick fabric paint to add a dot or color the sites. I have a few pistols that have had the original application for over twenty five years. It's also good for determining where you may want to drill a dot on the front site or add color to white sites. If you don't like the dot placement, just scrape it off with a toothpick and try again.

My daughter's nail polish. For some reason she has some really gaudy greens and oranges in the collection that I've never seen her wear, but they work great for sights. I take a toothpick and just drop one drop into the recess, let it dry, then apply a coat of clear. If you don't do the clear it'll foul pretty quickly, but with the clear coat applied the dirt will wipe right off, and I've been surprised how well it holds up to cleaning chemicals. It eventually needs re-applied, but it lasts a lot longer than I thought it would.

I've never tried nail polish but lots of folks seem to like it. I've always used Testors model paint. A friend gave me some regular "site paint" which I haven't tried yet. I don't remember the brand.
