I’m a newbie to Sig and really like the simplicity of takedown procedure. I have one problem however, the takedown lever won’t seem to go back into the assembled position. Does the slide need to be in just the tight place, is there some trick?

Which model do you have? On some models, the guide rod thing needs to be positioned a certain way. There are "flats" on the sides that need to be positioned correctly or it won't go together properly. May not be the issue, but it was mine.

Is the lever not level? Or is it not all the way in?

Trying again because I believe I misunderstood the original post. If by “go back into the assembled position,” you mean that the TDL can’t be rotated back up to the proper position, then as mentioned there could be an issue with the recoil spring guide rod. If it’s a smaller model with flats on the flange at the rear, they must be oriented so they’re up and down, i.e., so the edges of the flats point at the top of the slide.

If new, the takedown lever may be hard to insert back into the frame. You'll notice that there's a bevel on the end of the takedown lever. Insert with the bevel facing aft, and rotate the takedown lever as you insert it into the frame. It has a cam action which pushes the takedown safety lever aft, out of the way. The takedown safety lever is the metal piece you see in the takedown lever hole, on the left side, which appears to protrude into the hole.

When the P320 is fully assembled, the slide release lever should be fully raised once, to release the takedown safety lever...if this isn't done, it's possible to assemble the P320, and not have it fire. It's a wise idea to do a "pencil check" before returning the pistol to service, after assembly, by placing a pencil in the barrel of the empty pistol, and dry firing with the pistol pointed up; the pencil should jump when the trigger is pulled, verifying that the striker is clearing the breach face, and the pistol is functioning correctly.

Lube O-ring on the lever pin
Mag out
Slide locked back
Push up on exposed end of recoil spring assy
Bevel on lever pin facing aft
Work the pin into the frame
Keep lever within its "range of travel" or you may get an "idiot scratch"

Sometimes a light tap is needed to seat the lever with the lever in the "closed" (horizontal) position.
This is to seat the O-ring into the frame...sometimes.
