Yesterday, I noticed a youngish father, and two young kids, leaving Home Depot with a two tone semi-something in a simple OWB holster.
Kind of flashy.

Question:
If you have been or will be open carrying in Florida (or other free states), do you use a holster or pouch with some kind of retention?

Choices:
1) Yes, a thumb break or strap
2) Yes, but more sophisticated, like a Safarliand Level 3
3) No, just an open OWB holster

Most of the holster I own have retention.

Some have adjustable retention.

only one have a thumb break. This one maybe easy to grab the gun from.

In general terms I prefer some kind of active retention on my OWB holsters. I do have normal friction type leather as well but rarely use them. I rarely carry OWB these days and I NEVER open carry, as I feel it brings far more problems to the table then solutions.

Whenever I hip carried (usually concealed) off duty, I always used a ALS/GLS style holster.

Now days, I never open carry and rarely ever hip carry; now that I switched to pocket carry (P365), I hate putting the gun on my hip.

For open carry I go with a Bianchi Carrylok id buy a Assent Pro-Fit if they made it for the P365 as I've tried all of the Safariland G/S/ALS systems and the GLS is far and away the best option.

Seeing someone blissfully unaware, bumping through life, with their Taurus on their right hip in a nylon uncle Mike’s holster makes me cringe.

When I carried, in uniform, it was a thumbsnap. Until better technology came around. And, we practiced weapon retention. While in a crowd, my elbow was pressed against my gun. And, I thought about it constantly. Bubba with his uncle Mike’s holster has neither the skill, nor the mindset to protect his gun.

The local feed on the NextDoor app is overflowing with KareNannies wailing and gnashing their teeth over the blood that will flow in the streets with Open Carry.

Each time I see one of those threads, I post a question: "How many people, other than Law Enforcement, have you seen openly carrying a handgun? Actual count please, I'll wait."

To date, there has not been one reply to those questions.

My personal observation: I have not seen an open carry handgun yet, other than cops.

I open carry in a regular kydex holster with no additional retention. I usually carry concealed, but will open carry when hiking or camping. That includes while driving to/from hiking or camping.

So I see those as scenarios with essentially zero close contact with strangers. If I go into a store (e.g. at a gas station), I will put on a cover shirt if there are other customers around.

I've never noticed anyone noticing my weapon on a trail, in a campground, or at a gas station.

A fanny pack is a pretty good alternative to open carry in terms of convenience on road trips, which has reduced my open carry.

I'm a concealed carry guy but I'm glad I don't have to worry about printing anymore. My favorite grocery store Publix has stated they won't have a problem with open carry.

No, Google is not my friend.

The only time I open carry is when I am out and about in the woods. Safariland ALS or GunfightersINC chest rig works for me depending on what I am doing.

I haven't seen anyone open carrying yet. I'll swing by Publix and check there since a lot of people are bellyaching about Publix allowing open carry.

I typically only OC on private property, but have while in town when we're down there.
Usually just the Sig branded OWB that came with the pistol.

I've seen a few people open carrying. I was sold a pistol the other day to a gentleman who was riding on his motorcycle who was open carrying a FNX 45 Tactical on his hip in a level 3 holster. He does competition shooting and said while riding, it is hard to cc a larger gun that he shoots with. He has a ccw permit as well. I prefer conceal carry as I want the element of surprise when I need it.

can you not carry concealed? I would never open carry. what is the benefit. The only thing that is good is if your concealed pistol gets identified its still legal.

Some people think it would be a deterant. Im just not one of them

My wife saw somebody open carrying, haven’t yet. Nobody here would care if would probably end up with a Conversation about carry loads and calibers. I’ll keep ccw my 442 or 365.

I see OC all the time in AZ. It's legal and customary here. It's super common on motorcycles and we have year round riding weather. I only do it on the motorcycle, as it'd be very hard to draw from concealment in full gear. I have seen it in a bar here once, which is illegal (CCW is ok), but no one said anything to the guy or just didn't notice it. I look for it.

Are you sure about the open carry prohibition?

A quick copy/paste from the Gun Zone: (and I haven’t researched the Title 13 code in a while)
1. If I’m not drinking, can I open carry in a bar in Arizona?
Yes, generally, if you are not under the influence and the bar does not have a policy prohibiting firearms.
2. Does a concealed carry permit offer any advantages when open carrying in a bar?
While a concealed carry permit allows you to carry concealed, it does not offer specific advantages for open carrying in a bar beyond what the law already allows for open carry without a permit (provided you are at least 21 and not prohibited).

That stated, if I’m in a bar I carry concealed and do not drink anything but Coke Zero or water.
