I finally got one! Scored this at a local auction. It is in fantastic shape (every part has the matching SN) and WILL be used as a shooter. I became enamored with the longer barrel on this particular one. That combined with the beautiful wood grips and straw finished controls; it was OV for me. I detail stripped it tonight to give it a good inspection and cleaning. The mechanical design is absolutely amazing; not to mention challenging to take apart. Danke, deutsche Ingenieure! I really like the balance and feel in the hand, too. I can't wait to get it to the range tomorrow. This message has been edited. Tell us more, for those who are not familiar, about the model, history, etc. All I know is, it's old German and it looks cool. Q

Happy to as soon as I have it! I just registered over on the Luger forum. Face value, it's a G-stamped S/42 Luger (9mm) which, based on my initial rushed research, puts it as a Mauser made gun. The G-stamp was some kind of secret code for 1935. "GESICHERT" is "secured" and "GELADEN" is "loaded". That's stamped on the side of the extractor (I have a snap cap loaded). I don't know if any of it is legit or not, but based on the quality I saw and felt during the detail strip, I wouldn't be terribly disappointed if it turns out to be a knock-off. There is some serious craftsman level machining in this thing. I'll relay what the Luger forum comes up with. ________________________________________ -- Fear is the mind-killer. The only BAD thing about German Lugers.....one calls for a second one, then another, and so on. I am familiar with the addiction. Nice looking piece. Stick with normal velocity 9mm and NO NATO or +P ammo....they were not designed or built for it. Enjoy!!

Initial rumblings from the Luger community is that it's a very nice condition 1935 Mauser-made unit with 2 highlights: 1. It may have been rebarreled. This type typically only came with the 4" barrel, not the longer one. 2. It may have been refinished. If that's true, they did a great job. No complaints from me on either one. ________________________________________ -- Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. Gorgeous! That's one I'd be proud to own, it's in stellar shape. Love the straw finish on the controls. Congrats on that score. ______________________________________________ Carthago delenda est

What a great looking Luger. The mechanics of the Luger always fascinated me. I hope it shoots as good as it looks. Niech Zyje P-220 Steve

Peace through superior firepower |
There is no "may" about it. That pistol has been rebarrelled and refinished and the grips are new repros. The refinisher did an excellent job. I'm surprised people on a Luger board would hedge with the "may" stuff. It was apparent to me at first glance. This means that you can shoot it without guilt, and I imagine it will be fun as all get-out.

I started with nothing, and still have most of it |
IMO it has the longer barrel because it originally came with the removable stock. Longer barrel and those sights are correct for the shoulder stocked version, I believe. "While not every Democrat is a horse thief, every horse thief is a Democrat." HORACE GREELEY

You have a very "pretty" shooter P08. I'm sure you will enjoy it. Yes, you have a 1935 ('G' date) pistol. It is a military (not a commercial pistol). Mauser Lugers made for commercial sale had the "Mauser Banner" logotype in place of the S/42. Original barrel length was 4". Only commercial Lugers were offered with shoulder stocks after WW1. Yours is a military model it never had matching s/n shoulder stock. My comment on the 'originality' of this firearm: 1 - Para is 100% correct about replaced barrel, grips, re- blue and re-straw. 2 - Magazine appears to be a recent manufactured commercial. Unnumbered black plastic base is totally incorrect for this model. The correct mag would be made of plated sheet metal with a wooden (not aluminum) bottom bearing the the complete pistol S/N and military acceptance markings. 3 - Re-blue is bright, glossy "hot dipped" salt type bluing which Nazi's began to use in 1937. Your 1935 pistol originally bore the older less glossy "rust" type blue. I am not "knocking" you Luger of "raining" on your parade! I'd be pleased to own it. However, it's not the Luger collectors covet! I'm a Luger accumulator -- Luger collectors specialize. You may be interested to know that Mauser did manufacture a pistol that is virtually identical to yours (except for markings). The 1934 Mauser Swedish Commercial Contract Lugers were 9mm with 4-3/4" barrels. They bore 1938 (or 1939) instead of the 'G' and the Mauser Banner logo in place of S/42. These Swedish contract guns are very scarce (about 300 total). Perhaps someone wished to replicate (not counterfeit) one of these! ------------------------------------------------------------ "I have resolved to fight as long as Marse Robert has a corporal's guard, or until he says give up. That is a beauty. As for me personally, I would fire a mag full of rounds out of it just to say I fired it. But it would not be a "shooter". I'd opt for one in not so nice condition for that purpose.

No worries. I'm completely happy with it; got it at auction for $1k. I wasn't looking for a collector item; I'd be less likely to shoot a very high grade, original Luger. I'm getting new Mecgar magazines, since this is just a shooter. I'm not going to bother getting period matching magazines for it (type, not SN matched of course!). ________________________________________ -- Fear is the mind-killer.
