Should I Switch from 357 to 10 for EDC Login/Join

Despite what my CUT would suggest, I don't carry a 10mm. For years, my EDC has been a Sig P226 Stainless Elite in 357. But I recently purchased a P220 Stainless Legion in 10mm. It offers fewer rounds, but those rounds are a skosh bigger and have a bit more energy with similar velocity and flat trajectory. Both are DA/SA.

Most self defense situations end with few shots fired, so it would be logical to maximize the effectiveness of those rounds. Which argues for the 10. But sometimes a few extra rounds would be nice and the 357 is slightly more shootable for followup shots.

Please help me decide. Should I begin transitioning to the 10mm?

Not interested in 9/40/45.

Question:
What says the brain trust?

Choices:
P226 357 Stainless Elite
P220 10mm Legion (Stainless)

I would stick with 357. More capacity. And to get peak performance from the 10, you should run pretty hot ammo. There could be some control issues, increased recoil and slower back on target.
If was going to EDC 10mm, I would choose a G29.

While the 10mm may be 'better', it isn't like the. 357 SIG is a push-over! Beyond that, whichever you shoot better should be the choice.

I would stay with the greater number of rounds. I figure that the greatest threat most of us face is running into a car load of problems.

It's common around central Florida's more urban areas to see 4 "youths" in a car.

I know a couple of people who have been followed by such cars.

In that situation, I am thinking that round count is more useful than muzzle energy. I say that, having considered the same thing myself with respect to EDC of a 1911. I like that platform the best, shoot it well, and it conceals easily. However, I like 12+1 of .40 or 15+1 of 9mm more than I like 8+1 of .45.

Yes on the 10mm over .357 Sig.

Bullet weight and choice of rounds availability. That is why.

To be frank, though, as much as I love 10mm, the available ammo in 9mm means that .357 Sig is even less necessary.

When I do carry 10mm, I like Cor-Bon high velocity in the summer, and any 200gr offering in the winter to get through heavy clothes.

.357 Sig was a compromise from day 1, that was a bit more powerful than the other compromise, .40 Slow and Weak.

Go 10mm, or go 9mm.

10mm would be the choice of the options given.

.38 Super would be close to the .357Sig with the capacity of a 9.

I voted for 10mm. Actually, I'm really voting for the single stack 220 format. The 220 always fit my hand better than a double stack 226 or any double stack for that matter. And I prefer carrying single stack magazines OWB or in a pocket over the double stacks anywhere. So, go for the one that fits you right and more than likely you'll shoot better with it as well.

So is the 226 Stainless Elite.

I would go 10mm but dang. I would not want to EDC either of those platforms.

This. Which is why I dumped my 239 and went to my 226 for EDC. 18+1 Trumps 9+1 anyday.

357sig was my primary caliber for 17 years, utilizing various 40sw and 124g +p fmj loads to supplement training for cost reasons the last 5-7 years of running the caliber. I finally switched to 9mm after testing the 124gr +p HST. That load finally got close enough to 357sig to push me to switch.

I think the 10mm is a great round with full load. But for EDC I think it's a bit much unless you're outdoors / in the woods daily.

That's where I fall too. Summertime I am a 9mm guy, but once the heavier clothes come out here in OH I go 10mm.

15+1 in a G20 solves the capacity problem, and the G20 isn't terribly difficult to dress around. If it's an issue for you, there's always the G29 with 10+1 on tap, and a 15 round backup.

Personally, I believe that if 10+1 of warm to hot 10mm doesn't solve the problem - you have much bigger problems than choosing which caliber to carry. : )

You know I am not a 10mm guy but the few I have shot actually surprised me at how manageable they were. Now I obviously haven’t run any Buffalo Bore dinosaur hunting loads but even out of the tiny Glock 10mm (29???) I found my brain preparing for way more thump then it experienced. It was a little like getting punched in the face by somebody you think is going to destroy you and finding out they hit like a girl so to speak.

Ultimately it's really up to what caliber you prefer and what use youll have for the gun. If it were me, 357 sig has more than enough power for personal protection against 2 legged threats and would my choice for most occasions with the exception of hiking in the wilderness. That's when I carry my G20 which doesn't give up any capacity over its 357 brother.
