Seeking unicorns (magazines)
So I've got a P225 (the real one) semi-unicorn and a P220 .38 Super full unicorn. I'd like to get a couple more magazines for each. I've found ProMag for the P225 but they are apparently very disliked. I've found nothing for the .38 Super. Anyone know of magazine sources for either/both?

For the P220, do you have the european heel mag release, or the american release behind the triggerguard?

TripleK makes P220 .38Super mags, but they are TripleK. Many on this forum have recommended using P220 10mm mags for the .38Super P220. I've tried it and had no problems, but don't know that I'd use it that way for carry/self defense.

I have only tried it in an american mag release P220. I don't know if it will work well in the heel-catch P220.

For range/target use only I have no concerns.

As to mags for the P225, I can only say watch the gun auction sites, like that broker of guns by an inverted name, or watch eBay. And be patient.

I've sometimes wondered if the Walther P38 mag would work, but sold my P225 before I thought to test it out.

Last thought for the P220 in .38Super- just FYI- a P226 9mm barrel is a drop-in fit for the P220 with .38Super slide.

You can use the 9mm round in the .38Super mag [or 10mm mag], but it is not something I'd do for carry.

I don't know if TripK makes a 9mm P220 mag. You can sometimes find them on eBay/etc, but usually not at a reasonable price- and I think they were ALL for heel mag catches.

Just my thoughts.

Thanks for a helpful reply. I should have thought of that. Both are American mag release behind the trigger guard. I'll look into the TripleK as I only want a couple of extra for range use. I have factory mags, 2 for the 225 and 3 for the 220 and I don't carry either of them. Not quite safe queens but I have them because it pleases me to, not to work them. I have my G48, a 642 and a P365XL on the way for that. Thanks again.

When I owned both a 9mm P220 and 38 Super P220 I could use the 38 Super mags in the 9mm, but not the reverse because the 9mm mags had a spacer to take up room for the shorter length. Don't have the 9mm mags now, but maybe they could be modified for the 38 Super by removing the spacer, which ran down the back of the mag.

As to the P225 I recommend checking the bargain box of every gunstore you go into. I had 2 mags for my P225 and then found a P6 marked mag for $10 in a bargain box. It pays to be able to recognize used mags like that. Good luck!

Someone here will quickly correct me if I'm wrong.. but--in case it is helpful--I believe P38 mags can be used in a P225 less the notch for the catch (side button vs heel lever)--at least I get mine mixed up all the time. A number of surplus P38s+mags rolled into the country 1-2 years ago, and for range use (and considering the price of German P225 mags), I'd cut a notch in a P38 mag over getting a junk Promag.

P38 mags won’t work in my P225. Independent of the mag catch issue, a loaded P38 magazine doesn’t allow the locked slide lock lever to release, whether by pressing on the lever or by slingshotting. A empty P38 magazine will lock the slide open if you hold the bottom of the mag (P38 mags are a little longer than P225/P6 mags) but loaded mags won’t feed, and the followers don’t interchange. At least in mine.

As mentioned watch GunBroker and EBay.

Put a WTB in the classifieds here and be patient.
Also watch other WTB listings here.

Don’t over bump your WTB. Every week or two should be plenty. You might get a quick response or it may take years.

Stay away from aftermarket mags unless it’s the last option. Friends don’t let friends buy aftermarket mags!

Don't get TripleK, you will be sorry.

That's a bit of a bummer as Triple-K is the only semi-reasonable .38 Super out there at $50. Definitely better than $100 or $238.

A $50 mag that doesn’t work is not money well spent.

Avoid triple K and PROMAG like the plague ! On rare occasion each of them do tend to get something right ( triple K beretta 70 mags or promag glock 44 mags) but generally both produce the most unreliable junk out there.

It is all about patience I too have found various. Odd ball magazines in gun show junk boxes for under $20. Keep an eye open and don’t be in a rush is all.

There have been a few .38 special mags at reasonable prices on eBay lately.
