I've shot 226s, a 320 and an X5 in 40. I like all of them so I guess it comes down to if you want a polymer or steel gun and whats important to you.

I found all of them handle the cartridge well and are quite accurate as long as you do your part. The capacity is a bit lacking by modern standards for 40 in Sigs compared to an M&P or a few other designs (12 vs 15 for 226s. 14 vs 15 for P320s).

Whats your purpose for the gun?

P229. IMO one of the finest if not finest cobmat .40 pistol ever made. Plenty of cheap ones available these days too.

There seems to be a big selection of SIG LEO trade in guns out there. If your into DAK pistols Aimsurplus has a hell of a deal on P226 DAK in .40.

Sportsman OutDoor Superstore has a ton of SIG LEO trade ins in all conditions to choose from.

You can get used/trade-in for $500-$600 for 229/226. Market is flooded with them.

TGS has P226 and P239's:

I own P239, P226R and P229's in .40. I like them all, but the nod would go to the P229.

P226 or P229. Then throw away the .40 barrel and use a 357SIG barrel :-p

Walther PPQ M2, HK P2000, SIG P229 or GLOCK. You can't go wrong with any of these models.

I just bought a SIG factory CPO "Certified Pre Owned" P229 .40S&W from Guns Midwest for $479.00 (+15. shipping and $14. cc fee = $503. delivered to my FFL) For $139. more, you can add a SIG 357 barrel.

Mine is absolutely like brand new. It has the low style (Legacy) slide serrations and no rail plus 2 12rd mags, E2 grips and factory accessories in factory SIG red box. It also comes with a 1 year SIG factory warranty. I have purchased new SIG's in the past and these are indistinguishable from new. I believe they are LEO trade-ins that are reconditioned to new.

They also have P226's with a rail.

I have no affiliation with these guys, but saw that the OP was looking for a .40 and thought I should share my good fortune. I have also been looking for a P229 .40 for a while and this is the best deal I could find.

Ask yourself some basic questions and your answers will guide you to the right Sig for you. Do you want all steel or hybrid polymer/steel? hammer or striker fired? concealed or open carry? DAO, DA/SA, SAO trigger? How do you intend to use it home or personal defense, range, hunting? etc.

There are lots of quality 40/10 caliber handguns in the marketplace that previous posters have mentioned.

I couldn't have said it better. I have a few .40's, but the 229 is the best in my opinion. It handles the .40 very well, is reliable as a Swiss watch, and is very accurate.
