I'm wondering if anybody here knows the part number for the springs to the original zipper back 228 magazines. Tried Wolff springs but seem to be for the newer wider magazines and won't get past the middle of the magazines. Unfortunately in the Socialist People's Republic of Massachusetts I am limited to pre 1994 magazines.

I don’t know that it will do you any good because SIG has changed its parts numbers a few times. From an old parts listing, though, the spring for the 13 round P228 German manufacture magazine was 34260640.

From what I can tell based on the same list, though, you might be able to use the spring for P226 magazines. The P228 and P226 magazines are the same width, and evidently the 226 mags used the same springs despite having somewhat longer tubes. I wouldn’t buy a gross of the things before confirming, but you might want to try that and see if it works for you. (The only complication is that the German and Italian magazines used different springs as well; but it couldn’t hurt to try.)

Out of curiosity I checked the innards of a 15-round 9mm P226 magazine and a 13-round 9mm P229 (not P229-1) magazine. (The P228 and original 9mm P229 use the same magazines.)
I don’t have any German examples of either, but both were made by Mec-Gar of Italy. Except for the tubes and floor plates, everything was identical: the followers and “inserts” were the same, as were the springs, to include size, shape, and number of coils. If I wished to replace the spring of a German made P228 magazine, I’d see if the current Mec-Gar 9mm P226 components would work. To avoid any incompatibility issues, I’d use the current follower, spring, and insert.

I don’t know about Mec-Gar, but even though they’re not listed on their site, I have purchased magazine components directly from SIG. That was some time ago, so I don’t know if that’s still possible. With some people being restricted in what magazines they can own, I would hope there’s a source of repair parts.

One of the long time knocks on Mec-Gar is that you couldn't buy components to rebuild magazines...at least, from the manufacturer. Most folks I've known replace magazine springs with ones from Wolff.

It has been a while since I've checked and wondered if their policy had changed
