How Often Do You Rotate Loaded Magazines, If At All? Login/Join

Every time I speak to someone about semi-automatic pistol maintenance, I seem to receive a different answer on magazine rotation for mags that are kept loaded. I have received answers from every 1 week to only after the magazine has been used. Lucky Gunner has an interesting article/video on this subject. I have listed the link FYI.

https://www.luckygunner.com/lo...gs-and-ammo-cycling/

Question:
Magazine Rotation: For those of you who keep magazines loaded for self defense or other reasons, how often do you unload the magazine and load up another in its place?

Choices:
Every 2 Weeks
Every 1 Month
Every 3 Months
Every 6 Months
Every 12 Months
Only After Used

Question:
How often do you take apart and clean your magazine(s) after using it?

Choices:
Every Time
Never
Every 3 Times
Every 6 Times
Every Few Years

None of the above

I test out carry magazines (3-6) typically for the first 500-1000 rounds of the gun. Then they are cleaned, loaded, and only reloaded when fired. But they stay carry mags. I clean them after they have been fired, but they are carry mags for life.

Training mags get shot a lot and cleaned every 6 months.

Thank you for the response. I assume that you never had any malfunctions from Not rotating your magazines?

When I get a new magazine that I intend to carry I test it by putting it unloaded in the gun. Then I pull the slide back to see if it locks the slide to the rear.

I load it. And it stays loaded until after a year or so I shoot the ammo up to get fresh. Then I reload it with new. The only time I disassemble and clean mags is they get nasty. When I worked the road, I cleaned them a little more frequently because they were exposed to the elements more. Working plain clothes not so much.

I swap mine out monthly. Inspect the ammo and reload. I am more concerned with having clean and serviceable ammo than concerns with the mag. I wipe down my magazines after shooting but dont often completely disassemble them.

I clean every magazine I own after every time I fire the gun. All my mags are spic and span clean inside.

No need to rotate mags. It’s not needed. Just inspect the magazine springs every year or three. If they are in need of replacement, replace the springs or the mags, whichever is economically cheaper. (I find it cheaper to sell and replace Glock mags usually than to buy new springs)

Correct, I shoot 1-2 carry mags every 3-6 months (the 1 in the gun and reload). Bang bang bang, never had an issue. For the G19 I work through all 6 mags every year. Never had an issue with it or any of my other guns that I carried previously (P2000SK, PPS).

Training mags get worn hard put away wet and even then I rarely have issues, which are usually ammo related (Wolf in the Glock).

I also have some G19 and 17 mags in an ammo can, shot once and reloaded about 4 years ago. I have every confidence they will all work fine.

I do what Jones does....

I shoot my edc/self Defence ammo annually and clean the mags then...

Same here, but maybe not even annually and more like every 18 months or so. I do ocassionally pull them and give them a seating tap or two, and if they’re looking pretty linted, give them a quick blast of canned air, but even that feels unnecessary.

Modern magazines can be loaded and left loaded for a long, long time without problem. It’s the compression cycles that wear the springs out, loading and unloading them. I think for some folks, it’s simply an excuse to play with the gun. I just leave it loaded and holstered. Same with the backup mags.

You make some good points P220 Smudge. I keep meeting people who believe that magazines must be changed bi weekly or monthly. I also believe that they just wearing out their magazine springs from the repeated impression and release. In the linked to the Lucky Gunner video Chris states that SIG Sauer recommends changing the magazines every six months if loaded while many law enforcement agencies recommend every three months if magazines are loaded. I can understand why law enforcement agencies would give the three-month recommendation since officers are subject to the harsh elements of the environment including their magazines and also when their wrestling and fighting with suspects the magazine is subject to increase pressures. For civilians I think it is completely different.

I have also been told that if I keep my firearm loaded the top round in the magazine in the round in the chamber should be taken out every month since the increase pressure may affect the head spacing in the round. I have followed this advice and put those magazines in a bag. After a year or two I take those magazines out to the range put them in magazines and fire them and have never had a failure. I will probably just continue to do it since it is easy and it allows me to look at the magazine for visual inspection.

I must admit I think I am one of the few people I know personally that cleans the magazines after shooting. I take them apart and put a small amount of solvent on a rag and run that up into the magazine, wipe off the follower and spring. Most people are not doing this in the magazine seem to work fine without any issues. I like my equipment be very clean so that is a personal preference.

There are many people who do not clean their firearms, but unless you are carrying a Glock I would not recommend following that procedure.

Well, in light of your post, I used to carry P220’s and P229’s. I used to regularly strip, clean, and lube them. I still managed to sweat into the mag catch of one of my 229’s one summer that the mag catch rusted in place. I doubled down on the cleaning.

Now I carry Glocks, don’t have those problems and concerns. Darn things always bang when called upon to do so. Blowing the lint out of my carry piece with the first shot at a range trip is always amusing.

I carry a pistol to protect myself, and as such, other than being up against my side all day, every day, it’s always in contact with me but gets handled very little otherwise. I have others for dry-fire practice and drills, so basically, it gets left alone. This way, I’m not constantly cycling rounds through the chamber and risking bullet setback, etc.

Repeatedly chambering the same cartridge can cause bullet setback (push the bullet deeper into the case), which can potentially cause a dangerous increase in chamber pressure.

Just having a cartridge sit in the top spot in a loaded, inserted magazine will absolutely not cause any problems of any kind.

Thank you for clarifying that issue for me Maladat.

For the past 35 years I have rotated my carry/duty mags on the first of each month.

Clean mags - only when I have too (drop in mud puddle, etc...)

Maybe every two years or so I'll shoot up what I have in my carry pistol and replace it with fresh. Sometimes longer. I've never had a mag or carry ammo fail.
Mags that I have loaded up in the safe will stay that way indefinitely. When the economy collapses or the zombies come I'm 100% confident they will work just fine.

Annualy or Bi annually when I swap carry ammo. Im in the habit of having training mags and using them for practice reps as I believe the going theory is that you wear the springs by constant loading and unloading.

My carry ammo was loaded in mags on 10/3/2017. It’s still there.
I see absolutely no reason to shoot up HSTs “just because”.
It’s not like the gun or mag is stored in a vat of Kroil. Federal makes ammo that has the same ballistics as HST duty/carry ammo...shoot that and save the good stuff unless you have reason to believe it got contaminated.

You can eliminate bullet setback by *easing* the round into the chamber instead of banging it in using full slide velocity.

I agree KMitch200, I shoot my expensive self defense ammo after 5 years. It is kept inside in a temperature controlled environment. It worked fine after 5 years. No problems.
