Colt Detective Special. I wouldn't sneeze at it even today.

While that sounded like a good idea, I had it in my head that the Model 13 was newer than that. Looked it up. Started production in '74.

It’s interesting to think back to those days.

The “would” in the original question assumes that it would have been legal to carry then, and most places it wasn’t without a permit that was generally very difficult to impossible to get. Not only do we have much better guns and ammunition to rely on for self-defense now, but in general the laws are far less restrictive across the country than they were in 1968. There are many things that I would like to be the same as they were then, but those two aren’t among them.

6.0/94.0

To operate serious weapons in a serious manner.

A new Browning High Power and I would put away several in safe keeping for the future.

Then I would buy a FN FAL rifle or several.

Probably a 1911 in .45. High Power is a nice gun, but hollow point technology only recently brought 9mm up to the effectiveness of today.

My thoughts as well. Plus the hipower trigger reach is too short for me. I'd carry a 1911 in .45, perhaps a lightweight commander.

If I were back in 1968 I would probably pick a good revolver in .357, either a K or N Frame Smith & Wesson. Not only was the ammunition not as effective but semi-automatic pistols weren’t as reliable. Some of my earliest gun memories (from the early 1970s) was when my dad and uncles would go shooting. It seemed like the shooters with the semi-autos would always have problems, while the revolvers usually kept on going and going and going.

Sort of. It also bears that policing was different in those days, and a lot of people carried concealed guns because they didn't fear the interaction with their local cops. Hell, in those days, people mostly knew their beat cops.

You're right; I was thinking they were an early '60s release. It was 1974. Make mine a Model 19 then.

Commander in 38 Super would be cool! 45 probably more realistic.

1968? Restricted to ammo and equipment of the time?

Model 27 if concealment wasn't a primary issue. Model 36 if it was.

BHP with the aforementioned Super-Vel 9mm, or the old Hirtenberger sub-gun ammo. Because...

Why I’d carry my 1968 production year Smith Model 10 of course!
