Just mobilize it |
Took my FN 509 Midsize MRD out to the range today for the first time just to make sure it functioned well before mourning up my Vortex Venom. Good news was, as expected, it functioned flawlessly. Bad news, if you could even call it bad news, was that I believe due to the suppressor height sights the gun shot several inches low at 7-11 yards, when all my Smiths and Glocks with standard height sights shoot POA=POI with a combat style hold. I had to basically aim half way down the front blade (so half the blade is sticking above the plane of the rear sight) to get close to getting to POA. It raises some questions as to whether or not I can expect to mount a red dot and be able to make it shoot at 10 yards or less to the dot, as it seems to me that based on the sights shooting low as is, the dot would have to disappear below the top of the front sight right? Am I thinking about this wrong? Clearly I’m new to pistol red dots.

The relationship between the sight heights is likely the issue. Within reason, the actual height of sights should not matter for practical purposes. With even very tall sights, there isn't going to be enough mechanical offset to notice. You should be able to get your red dot zeroed at whatever distance suits you and be able to make more precise hits than with irons at essentially any distance within reasonable handgun range.

Well I suppose I’ll mount the red dot and just see. If anyone else has any insight I’d love to hear it.
