Not all models are available without the lock and I think most models can only be had with it. The first models in the lock era to be made without it were the lightweights in .357 Magnum (people were complaining about it self-engaging under recoil). The recently-released Mountain Gun series is lock-free, and so are a number of the classics.

It seems there will be more and more lock-free options as time goes on. I hope S&W either makes the lock optional on all models, or just abandons it entirely.

I avoid even picking one up if has that ILS. I feel like I need to immediately wash my hands. I currently have 10 S&W revolvers. None of them have that abomination and none that I own ever will. I'm just looking for a 6 inch barreled 27, 28 or a 1955 in 45 acp, so it likely won't be a problem.

The phobia seems to go beyond annoying, past worrisome, all the way to debilitating.

I only buy guns that I like the looks of. I think the hole is a reminder of all of the problems we face as gun owners. There is nothing I need a gun for that would require me to buy a gun that I was not happy to own. But I think that if the hole does not bother you, you should only buy the newer, more modern S&Ws. Leave the old ones for me.

People buy what they want. What other people think about it doesn't really enter into the equation.
