So after some research and trying a few different handguns I decided to pick up a G17 gen 5 for my full size carry handgun, I had a G19 but it did not felt good in my hands so I sold it. The G17 gen 5 feels better than gen 3 or 4 G17's. I really like not having the finger grooves and I don't plan to change anything within the trigger other than a Ghost connector, I order 10-8 sights and that should be it as I'm looking forward to the first range trip. I honestly think that Glock shouldn't be charging more than a gen 4 but that is just my opinion, overall I like it and so far and just need to run a few rounds through. | ||

I would shoot it before you change the connector I used to always change various things in my gen 3 and 4 glocks...triggers, connectors, springs The gen 5s I slap night sights on and I’m good to go out the box. Most definitely agree with this. My 17 & 19 Gen3 both have "-" connectors and my Gen 5 did not need them. I also really like the Ameriglo sight option that Glock has now. Need to put a few more rounds down range but I may like them better than the Trijicon HDs. | |||

The only reason I haven't bought a Gen5 is because I traded into a Gen2 and customized it. You'll get to like the 5 really fast. | |||

A few observations from work. We currently have about 70 Gen5 G17s in the field. I have got to shoot a bunch teaching the transition in the last bit. I've really got on the gun hard to see what I can get it to do. Full confession- I've never really been a Glock guy. I got drug into having to carry a Glock by my work. If left to me, I would still be shooting/carrying a P226 at work. The Gen5 has changed all of that for me. Coupled with our new duty load, 147 grain Gold Dot G2, they have got themselves a winner. I can't shoot the gun as fast as I can an M&P. There were some days where I would teach the morning session with my 2.0 Compact, and teach the afternoon session with a gun pulled from the vault. I can shoot the 2.0 faster, but the Gen5 is a close second. To me, all the gun needs is installation of Trijicon HD or HD XR night sights, and bullets. I did add a Glockmeister grip plug as well, and advocated it to officers as an authorized modification to the pistol. | |||

I have a 17M & really like it over the Gen4. Flared magwell & finger groove delete are both noticeable improvements. | |||

Thanks for posting this. Going to do a bit of T&E of my own tomorrow with the Gen 5 17 vs the Gen 4 22, in the hopes my agency will soon finalize policy to allow 9mm. Wanna be ahead of the decision so I know what to get once I have a green light. Question on the sights: Why Trijicon HD or HD XR vs the "stock" Ameriglos on the Gen 5? I've not shot any of these sights, so I have no frame of reference (other than stock Glock plastic sights or the Gen 4 Glock Night sights...which IIRC are Ameriglo). I don’t have nearly the agency experience that jljones has, but I actually like the Ameriglo sights better than the trijicons. The trijicons sit up higher off the slide than the Ameriglo sights. I really like POA and POI with Ameriglos Again, I’m nothing special...just an old broken dude that shoots. I did put 27,000 rounds through a gen 3 g17 once upon a time, so I’ve shot glocks a little. I’ve probably got 10,000 rounds plus already through my various gen 5s (2 17s, 2 19s, a 19X, and a 34 MOS). I had a 26, but sold it. That was the only one that didn’t really fit me (disclaimer I’m a big dude with big hands) They are great guns —————————————————— If the meek will inherit the earth, what will happen to us tigers? | |||

I never saw the need for a grip plug, until the Gen 5s. The wider flared magwell allows the magazine to hang up slightly on the rear cutout, introducing a "hitch" in my reload at speed. I ended up having to put a grip plug in my Gen 5. | |||

I shot a bunch over the weekend. I shot FAST drills for a couple of hours on Saturday. I think that the plug really helps for the reasons you mentioned. Grip plug porn.  | |||

None that I have seen. Matter of fact, I've seen- 1 squib round that got a second round fired behind it that bulged the barrel. The second round sent both rounds out of the barrel causing two key holes. It tied the gun up so bad that it had to be sent back to Glock. The ammo manufacturer is paying to replace the gun. 1 stove pipe from a smaller statured shooting shooting weak hand only. 1 double feed cause unknown. total rounds fired- 42k All in all, I've seen about 60k go through the Gen5 total and no issues. I'll even go a step further. For the first time in 10 years of being issued a pistol, I am not scheming for some way to carry some other pistol, like an M&P. That is the highest praise I can give it. | |||

The Gen5 is what got me the Glock game. I had a lot invested in the 320 platform and a good few classic that I really enjoyed shooting. All performed well and I never had any complaints. Then I picked up a Gen5 at a gun show and it was the first time a Glock felt good...felt right. The Gen4 was a little much with the finger grooves but the Gen5 just worked. So I picked up a G19.5 and shot it and liked it. Added an APEX trigger, Trigicon HDs and an Agency mag release and I have a pistol that when I pick up feels like a part of my hand. I was hooked. I was tired of collecting and having pistols in my safe that did not get used. Glock are tools. and mine will be used as such. The G19 led to a G43. I will, order my G26.5 tomorrow at lunch. a 17 will follow shortly. | |||

With the Gen5s, for carry I'd choose the G19 but frankly I prefer shooting the G17 or the G19X, which I never would have said with the earlier generations. No grooves plus the Gen4 length of pull is just makes the large grip better as a shooter for me. | |||

Since LE agencies can buy the 19M and 17M, why did yours and other agencies opt for the Gen 5 instead? Better pricing? Thanks. | |||

The ambi slide release works from the right side with the same effort required from the left. Can’t say that about other ambi make / pistols... ______________________________________________ Life is short. It’s shorter with the wrong gun… | |||
