I have a Ruger GP100 model 1789, that I would like to carry. It has a 3 inch barrel with a fiber optic front sight, and a 7 round fluted cylinder. It’s a pretty good sized chunk of steel, so I was thinking OWB, and probably just winter carry. It doesn’t seem like there a lot of choices out there, so I’d appreciate any real world experience and recommendations for a good leather, or kydex holster?
Thank you in advance for the help.

I have several Ruger GP 100s. I have the 7 shot in both 3 and 4 inch. These days my preferred method is with one of the vertical shoulder holsters from Galco. They are pricey, but Galco has a 25% sale a couple times a year. I have a couple other Galco leather holsters. One is a Combat Master and another is a strong side/cross draw that really works best as a cross draw. The Combat Master, IMO, really needs a retaining strap. Also, the Combat Master puts a lot of the weight above the belt line and even with a stiff belt (thick leather or reinforced nylon, ) the gun wants to rotate out away from the body. I have one other holster for my 6” GP-100 that is not Galco, but I don’t remember the brand. I like it because it puts most of the weight below the belt line and that seems to make it carry easier. Of course, the longer barrel on the 6” is gonna help with that also.
I can’t help with kydex. I just believe that revolvers and 1911s ought to be in leather.

I’ll take a look at those. I hadn’t thought about a shoulder holster. That would work pretty good in a car.
I don’t know how much difference it would make, since I always wear an undershirt, but all of my current holsters have a sweat guard, and I kind of like that.
I stumbled across this one from Tucker Gun Leather. It looks interesting.
http://wrightleatherworks.com I have many of his holsters. Both for revolvers & semi-autos. Best leathermaker I know of.

If so inclined, have a look at Barranti Leather. While I don’t carry a GP100, I use a couple of different Barranti Summer Classic IWB holsters for 3-1/2”, 4”, and 5” S&W N-frames. 4” N-frame Summer Classic shown below along with a link.
IWB for guns this size works well for me (in-concert with a good quality belt); as always, YMMV. Barranti has potential OWB options, too, but they shine with revolver IWB options, IMO. The Summer Classic shows as being craftable for your revolver.

My S&W 686 is probably pretty close to a GP100 in both size and weight. My preferred OWB holster for it is a Milt Sparks PMK. They’re not cheap and the wait time is horrendous, but this is by far the best revolver holster I’ve owned in the last 30 years.
And I agree with other sentiments above: revolvers need leather.

Another vote for Simply Rugged, I carried a 3” 629 in one for a year or so, thought very highly of it then and still do as I’ve got about 6 other of his holsters for various handguns

Cannot disagree with this PMK / Milt Sparks recommendation.
I had the holster pictured a handful of years ago, paired here with a 3-1/2” barreled S&W Model 27. While I likely should have retained both items, I’m back in the shorter-barreled 27 game and am in the final stretch of the aforementioned Sparks wait-time for an exact replica of this holster…

Dang guys. Thank you, thank you. There are several that I have never heard of. There’s enough information here to keep me busy for a couple days. Most are priced about what I was expecting. Now if there was a way to get around the long wait times.
Thank you again. I really appreciate the help.

This is what I carry mine in. East access even with a coat on, or sitting in the deer stand. They have leather options as well, but I prefer the nylon for my purposes.

A third vote for Simply Rugged. I have several holsters from then and am very happy with all of them.

FYI, I ordered a Wright Leatherworks Predator, yesterday, for my GP100. The price was very reasonable, the pictures on the internet looked good, and the wait time was only 8 to 10 weeks. I have to admit, I don’t know the difference between a $135.00 holster, and a $195.00 holster. I have several Ryan Grizzle holsters, a couple Tucker Gunleather holsters, and a Milt Sparks holster. All of them have served me very well, and I can’t tell any difference in comfort from one to the other. Hell, I have a kydex holster for my PX4, and I think it’s comfortable. Maybe it’s because I don’t carry every day, it’s seldom more than 4 or 5 hours at a time, and usually closer to 2. This GP100 is probably going to be a winter gun, so only 3 or 4 months a year. Anyway, just wanted to let you know what I ended up doing. Thanks again for all the help.
