Checked my serial number and it is AUF1xxx. No M so it wasn’t modified.

My new 586 is pretty cool. Quite a bit different than the original but still pretty cool.

Nice! I think I’m gonna keep mine original.

I also think this is going to kick off an urge for other classic Smith revolvers. I had a beaten, but buttery smooth snub nosed Model 10 years ago that I traded and regretted letting go. I’m not sure I need another snub, but a 6” 686 would be quite nice. Or maybe a K17. Decisions. Big Grin

Yeah.

I purchased a new Model 19 that wouldn’t fire a cylinder full without two light primer strikes per. So I traded for a new 586. Runs like a top. I had some dream of maybe shooting stock service revolver division. But my last two C class outings in carry optics may have dashed that. I don’t think I have the emotional bandwidth to suck in two divisions simultaneously. I’m not bi-suckual.

LOL Big Grin

I had a very brief notion of trying this one at a Tuesday Night Steel match with some speed loaders and sort of came to the same conclusion while imagining how that would go. The one fellow who shoots a revolver on my usual squad at least has the sense to use an 8 shot.

My 686 no dash # AAF5881 purchased new, left the factory with an undercut forcing cone. I borrowed the tools from our armorer and did the work myself being extremely careful to not over cut. I stopped at exactly the halfway point. I had him do the "M" hammer nose bushing modification when that issue came out.

Regretfully, the gun was sold before we headed out full-time RVing.

Those grips look fantastic, I need to get a similar set for my 686 and store the Rubber grips.

Sure enough, I'm over at the local go-to "used gun" store today looking at their revolver cabinet and they've got a clean 6" 686-6. They're a tad high, but not out of the realm. With the $125 store credit they owe me, it brings it down to pretty reasonable. Ugh.

Altamont makes some great stuff. If I end up being dumb and impulsive and bring home that 6", a set of their checkered classic panel in rosewood would look excellent.

Altmont makes some really nice looking grips. Key word "looking". They also have a lot of sharp radiuses and edges that will beat the hell out of your hand when you actually go to shoot the gun. Especially if you're shooting heavy recoiling loads. Every set of Altmonts I've bought I've had to sand down all the contours and refinish.

I just bought a handful of Ruger SP101’s in 357 and 327. I bought Altamont rubber and inlays because I liked the looks. I get that you can always remove material and not add but these things were ridiculous. I ended up sanding those inserts for quite awhile. I only had to sand the backs to make them thinner but that reddish stain got everywhere. Ugh. Turned out nice though.

Looks a lot like mine, which was also my Dad’s (though not with any real cool story.) Mine is a 6” barrel, no dash, no M with an AJV serial and it is a ton of fun to shoot with 38 spl wadcutters.

BigSwede did you a solid - those are very nice extractor-relief (football) stocks. However, IIRC, the 586 and 686 series guns were among the first to wear the speed loader relief stocks, as shown in YellowJacket's post. Just sayin....if you want it to be all original. I like the footballs better and if I have a gun that may encounter some serious social issues, the target stocks would be home in a drawer and a set of Hogue rubber grips would be on the gun. No worry about speed loader clearance there.

Enjoy - always nice to reconnect with a memorable time in your history.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

Were only early 686s affected by that recall for modification?
