I'm considering a 229 Legion. I already have a legacy 229. Is it really worth the extra money?

Biggest difference... greygun trigger action -$150 and legion grips - $150.

Minor cosmetic difference... obviously color, I don’t think your classic has rails like the legion, the legion branding on slide and the top back side of frame is extended (bevertail)

So other than personal preference for cosmetics, assuming you have G10 grips... Superior trigger action (that you can add to yours if it is DAK compatible) is about it.

I have several P229s, including an older, pre-legacy P229 in 357, a P229R-1 in 9mm and a P229 Legion in 9mm that I bought when I found a good deal on one used.

The Legion is NOT 1 iotta better than my P229R-1, in fact I'd say it's worse.

The trigger isn't any better, the sights are even and the PVD finish is less durable than a simple stock Nitron gun.

There is nothing in the "Legion" catalog that interests me as far as merchandise.

I'll never buy a new Legion. Used, maybe if the price is right.

I think it's a great deal for the money.

Is it worth extra?
I think so for the night sights, front strap checkering, FCS, grips, and at least -most importantly for me - the X5 Grip Cut.

The Legion is much better to me personally.
First the trigger undercut helps me get a much better ergonomic grip. Couple that with the Legion grips and the Grayguns trigger and you have an amazing value already. Then they add Xray 3 night sights, stainless steel guide rod, extra serrations and checkering, low profile controls, and the 3rd magazine. I'm a fan and I own both. I just shoot the Legion better.

The undercut trigger guard and checkering cannot be done yourself. Those features make the Legion standout imo. Only you can answer if you think they are worth it.

The grips, sights, trigger, etc can be priced fairly easily. I personally like the legion guns. While I think the name and whole “club” thing is beyond retarded, the gun is a nice set of features.

I did forget to mention that the grips on the Legion are very nice, I replaced the E2 grips on my P229R-1, which I actually like for shooting but hate for carrying, with a set of G10 similar to the Legion grips.

The undercut and checkering seem nice, but to be honest, when I'm shooting my P229R-1, P229 Legion and even my P228 with original plastic grips side by side I shoot them all the same. I notice zero shooting advantage from one to the other.

The X-Ray sights are no better than normal Siglite night sights, in fact, the X-Ray sights are a pain because my Legion shoots a bit low, like a lot of factory Sigs do, and I've found nowhere to get different numbered X-Ray sights so that I can change the POA/POI.

Again, I do not think the Legion is worth a penny more than a standard P229R-1.

^^ +1, I put the gray guns trigger in mine and it did not improve anything. But it didn’t feel as smooth so I put the old one back in. I was pretty disappointed but It’s not like the P series guns actually need a trigger upgrade anyway. And I agree with the pvd finish, it’s garbage. I’ve seen more than a few legion guns that look like they’ve been used more than they have.
I do however like the grips and the slide release a lot.

Amen.

Strike the club branding & coin and apply the basic Nitron finish. Sales would increase; complaints would decrease.

Also, any concern as to the price premium really points to an underlying concern of the price for a basic Nitron 226/229 model. If one is OK with that base price, it’s kinda hard to then label the Legion as overpriced.

I sure will, the Legion is OVERPRICED.

Cost for Sig building the gun, what's really the difference between a standard line SIG P229 and a P229 Legion?

Sights? X-Ray sights do NOT cost SIG any more than Siglight Night sights.

Trigger and frame parts... There isn't a single part in a Legion that costs more to make than that same part in a standard Sig except maybe some royalty to Bruce Gray for his design, I'll guess $5 per gun royalties.

Grips. Here there is a cost difference between the Legion grips and standard plastic Sig grips. Just guessing, and I'll be generous, maybe it costs SIG $30 a set for Legion grips where the plastic molded grips are probably $2 a set.

Front Strap checkering and undercut. Hard to say but the whole frame in both a standard gun and a Legion probably start out from the exact same pile of raw frame blanks. Put them into a CNC machine and mill all that down to a frame. Do you really think machining costs any more? I don't. But just to appease I'll say $10 extra machining cost. LOL

PVD coating, I don't care what this costs, it sucks and we'd all be better off with Nitron Legions.

Add it all up,

All said and done, addit up and it's $43 bucks. Maybe.

To me, the Legion is overpriced and comes with a poor finish that doesn't hold up; I own several, but didn't pay retail for them. I bought gently used. Yes, they are nice; not nice enough to justify the cost, but okay.

The PVD finish might as well not be there. It doesn't even hold up well to a staring contest.

The P320 Legionis a great bargain for what you're getting. I don't think the same holds true for a retail Legion P226 or P229. Used, if you get a good deal, you'll have to judge for yourself.

Sig metal guns are way over priced for what they are, so of course the legion is likewise overpriced. But johns post was just nuts.

I’m not sure if your cost estimates are accurate. But I am sure I wasn’t speaking of Sig’s cost. There is often quite an unreconcilable gap between cost & market value.

I think it is worth it. I was an early adopter in spite of the extremely corny, poor marketing angle of it.

As others have said, it has a great trigger and the undercut plus G10 grips make it fit my hand like an old pair of blue jeans. Lastly, the small slide lock lever is great. On the original lever, my thumb would always hit it.

I agree the marketing was over the top but fun in a way and just because of the way I am it finally got me.... albeit I bought a slightly used Legion from a member here... P226.

Don't really know what your are supposed to do with the special custom semi-soft box or the coin, but I put the two Legion stickers on my vehicles....

So my answer is yes buy it... I mean really what's the worse you are doing... paying a hundred to 200 dollars more than you should? I've wasted that much on items worth a lot less.... things like a TV or Camera that will only last a few years and then be obsolete.... think about it... a quality gun will last forever or until....

I was initially put off of the Legion due to the negative reactions on the internet. Then my local dealer got one in stock and I asked to see it.

From the first moment I held it I was sold. I already had several P226s of various vintages and the Legion to me seemed to be the ultimate version of the P226, lots of small things that make the pistol better.

I have found the Legion case and accessories to be very nice as well. I bought the Blackpoint holster and magazine pouch to go with mine. I don't find the Legion marketing to be corny at all as they do offer some nice, useful stuff to go with the guns.

I can't stand the beavertail thing on the back. Thats a deal breaker for me. I could do a MK25 though.
