Your dad might have had one of these. A great feeling little pistol.

Those old Colts were very similar to the early High Standards. My Model A was pretty much the same gun. Pretty nice for a all steel .22.

Beautiful gun.

My dad has a Woodsman, though his is a 4” barrel and a later version. I believe his is a series 2. It originally belonged to his dad. I’ve been trying to talk him out of it for years without luck.

I have not seen a teensy front sight like that before. I wonder if it is cut down from the elevation adjustable Target Model sight.
Homemade looking grips.

My dad has one. It's a sweet shooting gun.

"The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford, "it is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards."
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

I had a 2nd Gen 6" Match Target which I enjoyed shooting right along with any of my .22s. Concerning old and long walks in the woods, I even carried my little pencil barrel Model A one mile through the forest, back to a wide open power line to shoot. One autumn day I was shooting my Super Redhawk about 150 yards off the back of our property. A dick head who built a prefab home in the field, next to ours decided the magnum report was too much for him to bare, comes out on his deck and sends a load of bird shot up over the trees around me. There after, I would hike back to the power line to shoot all I wanted and to heck with him. I am certain the blast from one of my 7mm magnums or, one of my Garands was about the same for him, as my 44 was at 150 yards. Big Grin

Interesting, 2nd series Match Target with funky muzzle brake and Micro sight replacing the Coltmaster.

The sights look original, and not like someone mucked with them. A lot of old guns I've come across have very meh irons, so toss a coin on that one.

The grips are very simple, but the way they are inleted for the frame and magazine follower tab makes me think factory.

Serial puts it very late 1930, so not quite a century old.

Arc

can you post a close up of that front sight?

when I blow it up it looks like a small , very small, pinned front, (as in replaceable) and what may be a rib in front of it,
or that may be a shadow,

polish looks different too

Its entire front sight base and blade have been altered by hand file or grinder. It originally had a long base and tall patridge style target blade held in place by 2 pins. A small portion of its base remains. How is its bore Arc because the entire surface of the old girl looks like it suffered rust at some point.

Doesn't really surprise me. Its outward condition says someone actually used/carried it a fair amount. It wasn't rusty when I picked it up per se, but it had a brown tint "nobody has rubbed oil on me in forever look to it. The bore is actually shiny with discernable rifling.

I like the size and simplicity of this, and its old school vibe. If I see a target model I'll pick it up unless the price is crazy.

I've had this for a while, I actually see new ones out there:

I do have the original barrel.

This is my last Ruger pistol:

That's a model you don't see. I might pick up the new model that comes apart and back together in a non-dumb way.

Years ago I had consecutive serial OMMs in .22 and .38, sold those keeping them together. Then this wandered by:

That's about it for .22 pistolas.

Nice 41 there. A friend also shoots a Clark barrel. They are good quality.

This one shoots really well. The new production 41 I saw had a rail on the top so you don't have to buy Clarks.

I saw a 41 with a 7" barrel, I want to say they were asking $3k for it... They are rare and all..
The brand new one was $1500. I picked mine up for about $1k. Spendy for a .22, but they shoot. The ultradot is classic.

I've had many .22 auto pistols and never a revolver. Of the S&Ws, I had 3 Model 41s, a much later .22 which was a inexpensive cheap made auto which I soon after purchase, resold. My most prized of the 41 style pistols was a mint boxed Model 46. A 7" gun which I sold at the Syracuse Gun Show. I felt like I was leaving a friend behind. The Model 46 came with brown nylon stocks. I never saw any difference between the 46 and 41.

I hadn't seen an Officer's Model Match of any flavor for sale for a while, and I'll be training my son on handguns soon enough. I like to start with revolvers. That's 1967, my Python is '68.
If you're going to pick one .22 revolver, the pistol that became the Python is a great choice. I had a Ruger Bearcat, and a S&W 8shot at one point. I forget the model of S&W.

My Dad’s looked exactly like that. I finally found a Series 2 that has the beautiful long barrel. Unfortunately the barrel is probably y shoot out as accuracy is not great.

Arc, yours says “automatic”
My recollection from shooting my Dad’s at age ca. 9 was that I held back the trigger and shot cup the mag. Can that be correct?

And yes, I am elderly, and my love of the woods is due to my Dad taking me deer hunting in Modoc County for years—until I started high school. Same with my older brother.
Thanks for the memories.
