This is why I personally won’t carry a gun with a magazine disconnect for protection. Range guns such as my Mk IV 22/45, sure, but not a carry gun. That’s just me…

Interestingly, the general opinion about magazine disconnects has done a complete 180* over the past few decades.

Back in the day (especially in the 80s and 90s), magazine disconnects were touted by many manufacturers as a must-have for LEOs especially but also armed citizens, some LE agencies insisted upon them, and prominent trainers/writers like Mas Ayoob advocated for them. The thought was that if you were in a fight for your gun, you should eject the magazine and then the gun couldn't be taken away and used against you.

Whereas nowadays, the thinking is that one shot is better than no shots, and many shots is even better. So the concept of purposely ejecting the magazine has been removed from weapon retention training, and magazine disconnects have almost completely disappeared from the defensive handgun market (except models produced specifically for jurisdictions where it's required like CA).

Nope. I even removed the magazine safety on my Ruger MkIII. Too bad he didn’t get center mass. Society would have been better off.

While I totally can see the merit of dropping the mag during a retention fight, and this has certainly happened, I don’t personally like them. I want the gun to fire at all times. I don’t, however, have the training or presence of mind to exploit this in a retention fight so there is that.

Long story short I vote nay.

I'm having this exact same internal discussion right now. Have a recently acquired Hi Power MkIII, and trying to decide to keep MC or not. Won't be an everyday carry gun, too heavy for that, but may take it in a sling holster hiking some time. Have heard removing it improves the trigger pull.

This is an example of where not having the mag disconnect has significant additional benefits.

On most other pistols it's mostly a preference thing. But with Hi Powers in particular, it has further practical implications.

In the Hi Power, the design of the mag disconnect affects the trigger pull. Removing it improves the trigger, often dramatically.

Removing it also allow your magazines to drop free, whereas normally the friction from the magazine disconnect causes them to have to be stripped by hand. (Or resort to using just the "mousetrap magazines" that have a flat spring on the baseplate that overcomes that friction in order to eject the magazine.)

So while my preference is no magazine disconnect, I could live with it if I had to with most models. As I did with a couple 3rd Gen S&Ws in years past. However, on a Hi Power specifically, I definitely don't want a magazine disconnect.

No mag safety, or any safety really! The FPB safety is ok, as long as it don't add trigger weight.

I liked the magazine disconnect we had on the old 3rd gen Smiths. I didn't count on it to work during an active struggle, but it was nice knowing that if I was going to go hands on I could drop the mag into a pocket and have a dead gun in my holster while one of the other officers still had lethal as an option. The Smith disconnect seemed to work well and not cause any other issues. As long as the mag was out before someone started pulling the trigger, that gun wasn't going to go off.

When we went to Sig, we required a magazine disconnect. Sig argued against it but then took the attitude that if the customer wanted it, they'd do it. Several years and engineering revisions later we were still having enough issues that we dropped the requirement and removed the various iterations of the disconnect from all of our service weapons. They didn't work as well as the old Smith system and when they broke, they tended to break in a way that broke the gun.

Our new Glocks have no magazine safety and I'm OK with that as well. I've also reached a point in my life where I'm no longer the guy voluntarily wading in to go hands on with mentally disturbed violent suspects.

I never wanted a disconnect on a weapon I wasn't carrying on duty and none of the HiPowers I own or have owned over the years kept one intact for long.

I have a hard time making a gun selection on the basis of what might happen if somebody else gets hold of it.

Cops carried revolvers nearly a century before automatic pistols came into wide use. Obviously revolvers don't have mag safeties ... but they don't have manual safeties either.

FYI they’re usually fairly easy to remove yourself with a couple punches.

A hard, solid NO. I want my semi-autos to still fire without a mag, otherwise it is an expensive paperweight.

Before I sold them, I replaced the mag disconnect with Sam bushings in all three of my MK IIIs, and also removed the Loaded Chamber Indicators as well.

I own only 2 guns with the disconnect. Both are 22lr range toys that haven’t seen the light of day for years. I usually grab my MkII.
