TheFrontRangeThe Not-Overly-Long And The Not-Too-Short Of It: A Brace of S&W Model 27-2s
As my S&W N-Frame fandom continues, a little eye-candy of what’s been to the range with me lately below.
I’ve owned the 5-inch 27-2 shown for a handful of years now; I’ve probably logged somewhere between 2,000 and 3,000 rounds through it. As I’ve shared previously, this one gets carried often, usually in a wonderful Barranti Leather Summer Classic IWB holster. I recently moved a set of original Bear Hug Grips from a Model 28-2 over to this 27 and subsequently found myself wishing I’d brought MORE full-power Magnum and +P ammo with me to the range - the grip and gun combo just soaked up the recoil like a champ.
The 3-1/2” gun is very new-to-me and has a bit of age on it (like I do) - it’s an S-prefix that I believe hails from the vicinity of my birth-year. The seller indicated it was their understanding that the gun had received a factory refinish at some point; I can’t tell for sure but I’d surmise it’s likely. It came with its original Magna stocks and I added a BK Grips grip adapter. While not the same “feel” as a genuine Tyler T-Grip, the BK unit works really well for me. I’ve owned a couple of similar shorter-barrel 27s over time, but this is the first that’s been this “visually nice;” that said, this one will be carried, also.
The fire-breathing shot is a video-clip still of the 3-1/2” gun firing a 110-grain JHP in .357 Magnum.
Also shown is a wonderful old K-22 that is not just fun to shoot on its own - it typically goes with me to the range anytime a centerfire revolver does.

pedropcolaOh I like those. I don’t need an N frame 357 (other than my 627 Pro) but those are nearly perfect. Manurhin can suck it. lol

egregoreAre you sure the cylinder/barrel gap is OK? The gap blast is as big as the muzzle's.

1KPerDayThat 3.5” N frame is the nicest looking DA revolver ever made IMO. CONGRATS!

Those 627 Pros are no joke - I had one and really should have held onto it.

Well, I have no gauge to verify that but I’ve also experienced / seen no ill effects. I’ve taken a handful of short videos at the range like this over time with some other N-Frames shooting Magnum loads and have seen similar plumes.

shovelheadI only have one 27, an 8 3/8” bbl.
About the most useless gun I have. But it’s fun to shoot.

I think I remember an article by Terry Murbach (I think I have the name right) where he extolled the virtues of a “Long Tom,” as he called it, 8-3/8” Model 27. I bet they are indeed a lot of fun!
