I’ve flown many times and checked a firearm, so I’m pretty familiar with what’s required regarding having a locked case, declaring the firearms, etc., but what about a pistol with a MRDS mounted? The MRDS uses a lithium battery, which have their own regulations for airline travel.

From what I’ve read on FAA and TSA websites, it says that spare lithium batteries must be in carry on luggage. What about the installed battery? Is it ok to leave the battery installed in the optic, and check it? This part is all new to me, so any experience from those who have flown with MRDS equipped pistols is greatly appreciated.

From "details" button on "Portable electronic devices, containing batteries" on second page of "Batteries and Electronics" tab at https://www.faa.gov/hazmat/packsafe/

quote:
Most consumer personal electronic devices containing batteries are allowed in carry-on and checked baggage, including but not limited to cell phones, smart phones, PDAs, electronic games, tablets, laptop computers, cameras, camcorders, watches, calculators, etc. This covers typical dry cell batteries and lithium metal and lithium ion batteries for consumer electronics (AA, AAA, C, D, button cell, camera batteries, laptop batteries, etc.)

Devices containing lithium metal or lithium ion batteries (laptops, smartphones, tablets, etc.) should be carried in carry-on baggage when possible. When portable electronic devices powered by lithium batteries are in checked baggage, they must be completely powered off and protected to prevent unintentional activation or damage. In electronic devices capable of generating extreme heat, heating elements must be isolated which could cause a fire if activated, by removal of the heating element, battery or other components.

Spare (uninstalled) lithium metal and lithium ion batteries are always prohibited in checked baggage and must be placed in carry-on. When a carry-on bag is checked at the gate or at planeside, any spare lithium batteries must be removed from the bag and kept with the passenger in the aircraft cabin.

You’re good to put it in checked baggage. Done it many times.
