If anyone wants to pick up a P228 to use and shoot, Atlantic Firearms just got some in. One is stamped/marked with Star of David, the other is not. Only thing I can see is the difference between the two. I grabbed one that is marked, seems to be a cool piece. Be careful with these. I bought an Israeli Surplus P228 a couple of years ago (not from Atlantic) and the slide finish looked like it had been dragged behind a truck. Worse, the barrel lug was worn to the point that lockup was loose, and that was causing headspace issues and light strikes. A slide refinish, a new barrel, and springs has turned the old warhorse into a good shooter, but I'm into it for as much or more than I would have been to just buy a nicer gun. I'm not mad about it...there's a certain satisfaction in saving a "pound puppy" handgun, but it's nice to know up front that that's what you're doing. ----------------------------------------------------------- Any comments made by this poster are my own and do not reflect the views or opinions of my employer. | |||

That's what I told myself when I saw Israeli. They use their stuff, and use it a lot. So, told myself would probably have to get new barrel at the very least. Not to worried about finish as it will be a fun shooter and scratch an itch that I have had for a 228. I have just been to lazy to go store and pawn shop hunting for the good ones. The Israeli proof mark was the fun hook for me. Pistol with a story (maybe) behind it, but will never know it. Got an email last night from member MacGyver pointing to a W German safe queen he came across for sale, That is my grail gun. Just have to talk myself into spending the $$. Not cheap by any definition, but will round out my W German Sig problem I have. Going to be a tough talk I have to have with myself. Ooftah! It's all about clean living. I think the price on those is a bit too high as well. Unless you absolutely have to have Israeli markings for collectability reasons, those pistols look pretty beat for the money. Israel uses their stuff and is not known to be gentle on their weapons so those pistols have likely been shot a lot and they will probably need some love in the not too distant future. I definitely wouldn’t be looking at those pistols as guns that I’d want to carry or compete with as they are as I think you could get something with much more life for similar money or possibly less money in the long run. “It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. It would be nice to get one but like the others have said, these will be beat and need many replacement parts. If they are anything like the first batch I saw a couple years ago, it would be a pass from me. While the one they picture looks nice, I doubt it would look like the one you get. Gunbroker has some listed as well and they look tired/worn. | |||

Totally agree with what you said. But with my current way of doing things (laziness), it will be a fun project depending on how hard it was used. Not something I will depend on to keep the wolves away for sure. There seems to be more great classic Sigs out and about in the wild lately. Just my take on looking at what members are finding and posting about. I just have to get off my butt and go looking, and put in the time to search. It's all about clean living. With shipping and transfer fees, that beat-up P228 is $700.. I agree it would be ok if the Star of David had some sentimental or historical value to someone. But that's a lot of money for a project gun that's going to need parts.. To each their own..YMMV Idiot marks on the frame included. The cheaper version looks like it's in better shape. Well, I ordered one because I saw the Very Good Condition rating. I figured Even a Surplus Very Good Condition should be a fine shooter which is all I want. Reading this thread I am a little worried now. I am in it for $650 at the moment with my credit card rewards. This thread makes me feel pretty good about buying MacGyver's 1993 WG P228 over the weekend. $650 and a $20 transfer fee, no box or anything. But the no box and paperwork is good news, that way I won't be tempted to make it a safe queen. If the OP's P228s were a bit cheaper, I'd say that would be a decent deal. Good luck, Black92LX. In my recent looking $800 was the cheapest I could find then shipping. So I may have gotten a touch excited when I saw the $629. After ordering I did some more digging. Should have done it again prior to ordering and see that Cabelas in Louisville has cut their price on the 228 they had for $999 down to $699. I was in the same boat when I bought mine. I'd wanted one for years and everything locally was well north of $1k. When I saw that one online for $650 I had to take the chance. Thankfully I was sending another slide out to PMM for some work anyway, so this one just tagged along and I saved a bit on the refinish that way. Their pricing was pretty reasonable and it turned out great. I got the barrel on sale direct from Sig, but it was still kinda painful. And the springs came from my stash that I already had. I hear you buddy. Did I get excited? Yes. Did reading the posts in my thread make me second guess? Yes. But you know, I am not going to worry about it. I want to shoot this thing. If it is beat to shit, then bad on me for getting a little excited. I think these are going to turn out better than we expect. Atlantic has always been fair and honest with their descriptions. Even cautious from what I have experienced before. I still want a nice W German P228 to add to my collection. I will look and find the right one when the time is right. But in the meantime, I get a new to me P228 that I can shoot and putz around with. This will be fun. It's all about clean living. Just do the right thing, and karma will help with the rest. | |||

Try not to overthink it, that's what I do, and It usually ends up being all for nothing. I'm sure it will be fine.. A tad off topic but one of my favorite Glocks is a beater Gen 2 G17 I got at a gun show years ago.. I bought it as a truck gun, but I never leave a gun in my truck. It was just an excuse in my head to buy it. Anyway, it is the second most accurate Glock I own behind the G45. | |||

That's the key right there. Even with the issues mine had, I don't regret buying it. I learned some things, had an interesting project, and at the end of it all I have a P228 like I always wanted. And then I stumbled upon a P229 SAS and realized I liked it even better lol. Since I had some to to think, this is more relevant to the thread and used Sigs. I took this beat to shit two-tone WG P226 in a trade years ago. It looked like it had been to hell and back. It was my first WG Sig. You could hold the pistol, shake it from side to side, and hear the loose slide rattle on the frame. That thing was a tack driver, it shot so well I sent it to Brad and Mary at CCR for a full refinish. I eventually sold it to buy more Glocks. I guess my point is, don't be afraid of a little wear and tear. | |||

I have 2 including one shooter and 1 NIB so I’m good unless I find one for a deal. The Isreal markings are cool but not cool enough for the issues and I don’t get to pick it. As an aside, prices on 228 are kinda all over the place lately. Some guys know they made millions of them and and some guys think their made of gold. | |||
