I prefer the Commander 1911's (4.25) and CCO (Dan Wesson Vigil) sized for carry. Condition 1. “Posterity! You will never know how much it cost the present Generation to preserve your Freedom! I carry a Colt Competition (5", all steel) in .45 ACP every day and find it very comfortable and concealable. Loaded, cocked, and locked. If I ever have the misfortune of finding myself on a two-way range, I don't want to have to do anything besides index the weapon, bring it up on target, swipe off the safety lock, and begin administering motivational guidance.

My primary carry guns include twelve government model (5") 1911s. Nine are .45 ACP and three are 10mm. Nine are Colts, one Dan Wesson Valor, and two Springfield Armory TRP Operators. They are carried in condition one one my belt in a leather pancake style holsters. I also pocket carry a Sig P938 9mm in condition one. U.S. Army, Retired

I don't always carry a 1911, but when I do they are 5" cocked and locked. I find the slimness us what counts vs slide length atleast for my carry needs

+1 I can halfway understand chambered but not cocked. Or even loaded and not chambered (not really, but anyway), but cocked and locked on an empty chamber makes zero sense to me. Seems like an invitation for Murphy to pay a visit when SHTF.

I carried a 5" Colt Gov't model in .45 daily for 25 years. ALWAYS cocked & locked! I switched over to polymer a few years ago. Like them very much but have gravitated back to 1911's but in my DW Guardian in 38 SUPER. Rom 13:4 If you do evil, be afraid. For he does not bear the sword in vain. Primary carry is a DW VBOB in 38 Super or in 45 ACP but sometimes I carry my DW Silverback in 10mm. I also have a couple dozen full size and commanders in various calibers that I might wear. Been carrying 1911s for almost 50 years and always OWB as that is the way I learned and am most comfortable with. I carry either Condition One or Condition Two depending on situation. I have never really carried a 1911 on a regular basis. My wife has though, for a period of time in the 90s her EDC was a Stainless Colt Officer's Model, 3.5". It was carried in a Sparks Yaqui Slide. Cocked n locked of course. The gun was set up the same as her range/match gun - a Para Ordnance P14 that had been hard chromed to match the Officer's model. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tomorrow's battle is won during today's practice.

Nice! I just picked one up today. 300 rounds of a mixture of my various reloads and some factory ball. I prefer my Dan Wesson and Baers. I carry them occasionally but grew up on the 1911 in 45. It is always my fall back Gun and caliber.

Nice I am going to broaden my scope to include 4.25 inch. If I weren't such a chicken shit Non trusting butt head, I'd have had a gun by now, through either the forum or a distributer. But, N O O O o o o o I gotta be scared of doing new and different transactions. ( Good grief) Safety, Situational Awareness and proficiency. I agree, that confused the heck out of me... if you are going to carry a 1911 with the chamber empty what in the world good or benefit is it to have the hammer cocked and locked? To put one in the chamber you are going to have to drop the safety and cock the pistol....??? One other comment...the original poster wrote: " 88% chance mine will be a .45 acp." Is there really any other caliber for a 1911? My Native American Name: "Runs with Scissors"

Failing to prepare is preparing to fail. |
I have a Kimber 3 inch 9mm 1911 that I carry cocked and locked. ________________________ "Don't mistake activity for achievement." John Wooden, "Wooden on Leadership"

I have carried a standard size 1911 in the past as well as a Detonic's Combatmaster, currently, both are safe/range guns and I sometimes carry a 80 series Commander, perfect size to me, https://chandlersfirearms.com/chesterfield-armament/
