Necessity...or preference, creates a little fun.
I have been searching for some of the thicker base plates for some of my P220 magazines and was not having any luck. The flush-fit steel pads are fine, but I prefer the synthetic models that extend just a bit.
So, after running into dead ends, I grabbed a piece of 360 brass and hit the mill. I make putters for a living and if I can distract myself into a job that I've never tackled before, it is good therapy. I am happy with the way the brass turned out and blackening it will not be a problem. It adds a little weight, agreed and if there is one thing that the P220 does not need, it may be added weight. I've got some Delrin in the shop and maybe that will be the next run. Or, I get my butt back to work and catch up on putters.
Thanks,

Looks great. I'd leave it as is.

That is slick! For a range mag, extra weight might not be all bad...people pay good money to put tungsten weights in their X5s...I'll bet you could sell those.

I agree with 1KPerDay — I’d leave it as is; it looks great!

Yeah, I don't see that happening, but it's nice to hear. I'm a putter maker and have learned to stay in my lane for the most part. Occasionally, I drift and make a piece for myself that I cannot seem to find, but it is a rarity.
Thanks for the comment, though. It's never a bad thing to receive a compliment.
Have an amazing rest of your week!

Looks great!

I have a question- why? We're the plastic rails on the butt plates getting chewed up / distorted?

It was a case of thinking I could do one thing and finding out that I had just created more work. I have several of the mags that are flush-fit with the steel base plates. I found that I prefer the little bit of extension that the plastic plates give, but could not find anywhere that the plastic ones could be purchased. So, I figured that I'd make one to replace the steel, flat plates and go for it.
If you're familiar with the P220 mags, you know that the keeper plate on the steel flush fit magazines is different enough that this new brass one will not work on that keeper. So, if I want to swap out the plastic and go brass, I've got it covered. If I want to swap out the steel for the brass......more work ahead of me.
Your question is valid and sometimes I have no good reason. It took my mind off of other things for a little bit, and maybe for this job, THAT was the reset that I needed.

Put a little more metal down below, stick the right shaft/grip on it....could have the world's first 8-round putter!

Seriously, though, nice work! Smile
