The Sirius Dog Sled Patrol, an elite Danish Naval unit has replaced their Sig 210 pistols with tha Glock 20 for Polar Bear Defense. This really intrigued me as the 10mm seemed a bit light for Polar Bear.

They also carry a 1917 Enfield 30-06 rifle.The bolt action seem to be the most reliable in extreme cold. And the 30-06 is most capable.

10mm is .41 magnum lite. Put hard cast lead in it, and there's ample penetration.

It’s also one hell of an improvement over a 9mm p210

Not an expert on Polar bears but I suspect any pistol will be the last ditch effort to survive against one... but unless you get real lucky 9mm is not what I would want.

Interesting they still use the p17s, especially since there is a great Sako rifle that was made for the Canadian Rangers that would be ideal.

A number of years ago there was a National Geographic (IIRC) article about some guys who crossed the North Pole on foot. What I recall clearly was that they had a 44 Magnum S&W “Mountain Revolver” (like mine) that they used to kill a polar bear that was stalking/approaching them in what they believed was an aggressive manner. At the time there were comments that 1. even a 44 Mag revolver wouldn’t have been enough to kill a bear like that, and therefore the story was BS, and (of course) 2. “Why did you have to kill it? How did you know it was going to attack you?” [Sniffle, sniffle, sob!]

I'd love to know what ammuition they're using. If the Danes have no other 10x25mm firearms in their inventory, they would have to either develop their own load, or purchase ammunition on the market.

My choice for a G20 in bear country would be Double Tap's 200 grain hard cast solid. This a a gas-checked bullet at 1300 fps at the muzzle of a G20, for 750 foot pounds. Perhaps, do a candy cane loading of the magazines, alternating between DT's 200 grain solid and their 230 drain gas-checked solid. A couple of magazines so loaded, along with a couple of magazines of good hollowpoint ammo like Federal or Speer would make for good ju-ju when strolling through the deep wilderness. Hornady offers 10mm in their Critical Duty line- a 175 grain bullet at 1160 fps. Critical Duty is known for its substantial penetration, and when shooting a bear, penetration is critical.

Yes, but the Sirius Sled Patrol had switched to these Glocks 20s back in 1999/2000, so it's not a new development.

Member 3/4 Flap might know the exact load.

There's a thread from 2011 on another forum where he talks about having an email discussion with a member of the Sled Patrol about how they liked their G20s, and what loads they're using. He reported that they initially used Winchester Silvertip JHPs, but then switched to a custom FMJ load for greater penetration.

I don’t imagine these guys actually have to expend much ammo and most of it is probably culling animals or some such.

I would think any decent hard cast 10mm would be perfectly adequate considering they stuck with 9mm for so long.

As much as I really dig that SAKO Arctic Ranger rifle I don’t imagine it would be vastly superior to the P17s assuming they are still GTG.

The wiki article says that the 2 man teams can be on arctic "patrol" for 4 months at a time and not see another person during the entire time. I'm not sure of the importance of patrolling arctic waste land that no one wants? Maybe in the cold war (haha) but today??

Jesus man don’t rob these poor gentleman of this. I have no doubt the kind of guy who does this...WANTS TO DO THIS and savors “...and not see another person during the entire time.” Hell I’m a little jealous myself.

Back to the thread at hand, a question. Is the primary job of these guys really to patrol for incursion or are they basically like a LRRP version of a forest Ranger?

Sovereignty patrols.

If they don't exercise their sovereignty over the land, another country could possibly set up a claim and potentially even eventually declare possession.

Or an enemy force could set up camp. The Germans used Uboats to set up secret manned weather stations in remote areas of Greenland during WW2, to send meteorological forecast data back to the mainland, which went undiscovered for months/years.

Canada does similar sovereignty patrols with their remote Arctic wilderness too.

Similar to how some naval vessels will stop off at tiny uninhabited islands owned by their country on occasion, to run a new flag up the flagpole and take some photos, and reinforce their country's sovereignty over that spot of land.

Keep in mind that it may not necessarily be the land itself of that frozen arctic wilderness or deserted island that they want, but the associated mineral/oil/etc. rights, or airspace and territorial/fishing waters that come with the area.

Well you’re correct 1999-2000, that’s twenty year old news. The article talked about switching from Sig 210 to the Glock 20 and that seemed interesting. Thanks for updating with significant information.
I was impressed with the versatility and usefulness of the Glock platform. Apparently the 10mm is capable of penetrating the skull of the great bears.
