2011 external extractor question
Are they generally more worry free and reliable than internal extractors?

Yes. Bigger claw to extract brass and they never require tuning.

What I thought. Thanks

Thinking of a Staccato HD or Kimber 2K11?

don’t forget, you get $800 off the P4 or P4.5 HD guns. You only get 20% off the C3.6 or new C4whatevercomp HD guns. I recently passed 4k rounds on my C3.6. Guess I should clean it soon.

The claw size is a small advantage, but the use of a coil spring to tension the extractor makes the tension much more consistent and repeatable. That is not to say that all external extractors are created equal.

The early SW1911 externals were not as good as the later E series ones (early ones were smaller with a shallower spring pocket)

The Caspian design that was adopted by Sig with the GSR/ sig 1911, etc is very good.

The kimber externals which were put out from about 2001 to 2005 or so were absolutely terrible. They tried to use an extractor tensioned by a rod like a Glock, sig short style, et, and it just was terrible. I have not used or evaluated the one on the 2K11.

The Stacatto one seems similar to the Caspian/sig design, but it is not interchangeable.

It has to be better than the Stacatto internal extractors. About 80% of the repairs in the logs at my work are extractor retensionings on Stacatto, and they are only about 20% of in service weapons.

In many ways it isn’t Sacatto’s fault, the extractor channel in a 9mm 1911/2011 slide is in exactly the wrong place. It was never moved inward in 1955 when colt converted those first few .45’s to 9mm.

Really just toying with the idea of shooting limited optics in USPSA.

Downside is the HD4.5 is showing a 45-90 day delivery time if you go through Staccato for that discount. From everything I've heard, the 4.5 shoots like a bigger gun, so why not save money and get a bigger gun?

With the Kimber, Dawson Precision sells optic plate with rear sights and replacement front sights for Co witness.

Why not slap a magwell on whatever you shoot in CO to start? I think there are a decent number of people in LO trying to buy skill with a 2011 (I do not think you would be one of them). Of the three majors I shot last year, had I been registered in LO I would have finished a couple percent higher than I did in CO without changing anything (Practiscore Competitor app is good for these what-ifs).

Obviously if you just want a 2011, go for it, but I think most skilled shooters would find they hang better than they would think shooting their CO gun in LO.

Really more peer pressure than anything.

I think that's just what they put on there depending on how many orders they get. When I ordered my C3.6, it said 45-60 days. I got it in 8 days.

When I ordered an XC last year, the website said 4-6 months. It was just over two weeks before it got delivered.

Back to external extractors, the P211 GT4 and GT5 are starting to show up at dealers for $2,099.99. I could see myself trading my P226 Legion SAO for a GT4 after shooting the rental GTO at my LGS.
