Friend has a brand new Sig P320 that will not extract/ eject anything.. he sent me some pictures... I'm pretty sure I see the problem but would like others clarification:

If it's what I see then somebody at the 'custom works' needs to be whipped.

EDIT: yes, I fixed my mistake in the title and the text after being correct on the proper term.

That's a failure to extract, not a failure to eject. And it's because there's no extractor! It's completely missing...either it was improperly assembled and flew off, or was never installed in the first place. Good news is it's an easy fix.

Yup.

He will need an extractor. It is supposed to be behind the ejection port like this one:

Yes, an extraction failure, not a failure to eject.

But it’s very unlikely that the extractor was not installed in the first place. Although it’s more fun to assume it was an assembly error by someone who should be mocked in public and then drawn and quartered, a missing extractor would be immediately apparent during slide assembly. Not only would the extractor pin assembly sit much farther into the slide than normal, if the entire assembly is pushed as far forward as it will go, the rear slide cap could not be installed in the slide. In addition, the extraction failure would be obvious with any test firing of the pistol at the factory.

My guess would be that the extractor broke and was lost.

This was a new purchase at a gun store and he and the employee broke the seal on the plastic bag it was wrapped in after opening the box.

I imagine Sig will send him an extractor if he calls them, or take the gun back. For a BNIB gun, I'm sure they'll take care of him. Absolute worst case, it's a $20 part that takes less than a minute to install.

Being a fanatical Sig fan this is just too embarrassing. The custom gun works printed on the side just adds more insult to the injury.

I doubt if it will happen, but Sig owes him a lot more than just an extractor.

Do you truly believe that the extractor was not installed at the factory? Has SIG abandoned the almost-universal manufacturers’ practice of test firing guns before they’re shipped out?

If your friend wasn’t knowledgeable and/or observant enough to see and recognize the glaringly obvious reason for the failure to extract as he was firing the gun, it’s entirely possible that the problem occurred after he started shooting. Without knowing all the exact details of everything relating to the issue, it’s impossible for any of the rest of us to know anything more than that the gun doesn’t have an extractor now. How and why that happened is unknown and will remain so without further information—and which is unlikely to ever be available at this point.

And even if the problem was due to some employee’s careless mistake or even malicious intent to screw with a customer (and I can think of many much better ways to do the latter), what is SIG Sauer supposed to do beyond correcting the problem?

Seriously though if this really left the factory like this, and frankly with all the QC weirdness from Modern SIG it wouldn’t surprise me, I would absolutely be fixing that gun and throwing in a couple mags or similar as a “word of mouth” marketing about our good will. Adding something of useable value will take that from an incredibly embarrassing product that even when fixed would leave a bad taste in my mouth to an embarrassing screw up but at least it was addressed and they provided some extra goodwill and wouldn’t be nice if all companies fixed there mistakes with a little class like SIG did.

I would say that would be a wise course of action on the part of Sig in this case...a good marketing move and means of establishing goodwill with their customer...a concrete apology for a mistake. And even if the extractor was in there from the factory and somehow managed to break or fall out in the first range session, it's still their mistake.

I wouldn't say that they "owe" it to him, though. They "owe" him a functional gun, which he paid for. Nothing more. Choosing to go above and beyond that is just good people skills and demonstrating a desire to maintain an ongoing good relationship with their customer.

Hello, I'm the owner of the pistol in question. I forgot I started an account here when I bought a Sig P210 earlier last year. Now that is a great gun!

But I can only tell you what happened. I bought the pistol brand new last week. The LGS broke the seal on a new box. I didn't really look at the pistol. I was questioning how many magazines came with the gun, and not thinking of looking over the pistol.

So I filled out the 4473 and the counter people did their thing of verifying the serial number etc. They then handed me a closed box and I drove home.

I put in a snap cap and didn't really think about why the snap cap wouldn't eject or extract. I figured it was a slightly smaller diameter than a loaded round.

And no, I was not familiar with the P320, not at all. I bought it because of the compensator and the way the grip felt. Very comfortable gun. Plus Blume9mm speaks really highly of Sig and I've shot a couple of his guns before.

So I get to the range, remove the snap cap and load a magazine. It shot and then jammed (failure to eject/extract). At no point did the extractor go flying.

I know it's just my word, but this gun simply did not come with an extractor. I've been shooting for years and years, and a couple times things like ejector rods on a single action have gone flying. I would notice a malfunction like that.

Did it leave the factory without an extractor? Perhaps after they test fired it there was an issue where they had to disassemble the gun. Perhaps it was Friday afternoon and the test fire line was backed up and it got passed in the shuffle. Perhaps it was a disgruntled employee trying to stick it to a customer.

I can't say for sure. I can say nothing "fell off" when I was shooting it for the first time.

BUT... At 8:30am I was on the phone with Sig and they are now sending me the extractor, and the rod and spring holding the extractor behind the striker plate.

So it's all good. I don't know if they owe me anything extra. It's a great shooting gun. Very soft recoil, and just awesome grips. And no, I'm certainly not sorry I bought this pistol, and would buy another.

I shot it perhaps 10 rounds trying both magazines and different ammo. No, at the time I didn't think about extractor. It was after I got home and started talking to Blume9mm on another forum.

Rainy, thanks for coming and sharing the details. Glad to hear that you've got a resolution from Sig...I hope it solves your problem and you enjoy your new gun!

Of course Sig only owes him a fully functioning gun...

I'm sure from their perspective they should consider the possibility that Rainy messed with the new gun and lost the extractor.... but I am sure this is not the case having shot with him and such and read his post on the other forum... he's not screwy and not one of those guys who makes stuff up.

I run my own service business and I can tell you on the rare occasion I mess up, the customer gets more than they expected... it is just good business.

Like I said before, this embarrasses me.. if for no other reason on the other form (not Sig) Rainy and I are on as well as the once a year when we get together I tend to brag, perhaps a tad too much, about my Sigs.

Thanks for the kind words Blume9mm.

And yes 92fstech, thank you, I will enjoy this pistol. My other Sig the P210 is pure joy to shoot. I'll start another thread and post a picture of it.

Cool!

I'd like to have a P210 someday, but I keep getting distracted by another P220.

Please do! I've never shot a P210 but have always wanted to try one. I hear nothing but great things about them.

I find it a little interesting that they’re replacing the extractor pin assembly as well. I wonder if there could be a problem with that and perhaps why the extractor was lost (or why it was not present).

Can you post some photos of the present extractor pin assembly?

The rep I spoke with said he would just send all three pieces in case I needed them. I don't know if there is a problem other than the missing extractor. He said he has a package with all three pieces. The pin assembly is there, but I haven't taken the gun apart yet and not sure about the spring.

I didn't have a punch handy while I was on the phone with the customer service guy. I'm just going to wait until the parts arrive before taking it apart so I don't lose anything.

I will post an update at that time! Hopefully soon.

Pretty sure even a ballpoint pen will serve as a punch to remove the extractor assembly. YouTube is probably awash with P320 disassembly videos, just find one you like.

I've found Sig Guy's videos most informative. Minute 12:45 or so of this cleaning video shows how to remove replace the extractor.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?...SGJo9l74Trz&index=37

Watch the whole video for lots of good information and links to his other videos.
