I typically run a light and dot and I recommend running the dot in manual, and turning the light on while aiming at a white or light surface. Then adjust the dot to where it is visible but not too bright. This, I find, is a happy setting for most dots. You, of course, may need to dial a new brightness in but in a fight you are likely sticking with what you set it for that day.
