As a kind of retirement gift to myself, I went out and got me a 5½ barrel Lipsey's stainless Ruger Blackhawk Flattop in 45LC/45ACP



Took the afternoon off so I could pick it up early. As I was on my way to pick it up I was beginning to experience a hint of Buyer's Remorse. "It sounded like a neat idea, but, what are you going to do with a .45LC single-action revolver? Really?"

Have fun with it, that's what!

My very first gun of my own was my Old Model Ruger Single Six Convertible, which I bought in a small gun store in New Jersey, forty four years ago, while I was stationed there in the U.S. Army. I swear I never had more fun with any gun than I did with that good ol' Single Six

As soon as I got the Blackhawk home, fondled it a bit, dry-fired it a bit, admired it a bit, any hint of buyer's remorse evaporated as I remembered how much fun I'd had with my Single Six.

Here's that Single Six alongside it's big brother



Those two six-guns will be going to the range with me, soon.

I think the bottom-feeders will stay home.

(I think I'll get new grip panels for them both, first, though. Those faux ivory grip panels are too small for my hands and too slick. And I never really did like those grip panels I had put on the Single Six all that much. They look wrong.)

Those are some really sweet looking guns.

Just try not to grin too much at the range...

That is one to be proud of, heck I would be tempted to get a nice cross draw leather rig and carry that one while wearing blue jeans as a ride around in my pickup gun.

However, at least shoot the stock grips on the flat top because they roll up so sweet that recoil just goes away. 45 Colt is mild just the same. Some rubber Pachs will fill the hand nicely. Barrel length is perfect, cartridge is perfect, look at that serrated front sight. Keep it flat black, buy a sight smoker. It begs to be shot.

Ya' the only thing better than a Ruger fat caliber six shooter is another one to go with it!

I'll give 'em a try, but, I've large hands (wear XL gloves and even they can be small on me), and the grip, with the stock panels, looks like a toy gun in my hand.

Re: The front sight: Wouldn't change a thing. And I already have site black. Both a smoker and in an aerosol can. Used to use it on the front site of my TC when I shot handgun metal silhouette. Probably won't bother, with this gun, though. My eyesight really isn't all that good, for open sights, any more.

My first handgun.

Very Nice. On my 6" Flattop I had my 'smith install a taller front sight to accommodate my traditional velocity .45 loads. It's about the same height as the one on yours. Enjoy!

How about a 480?

They're sometimes hard to get, but a Ruger Super Blackhawk hammer makes a great upgrade for the blackhawk. It "drops in" with little effort, and it's less of a stretch on the thumb, and a wider spur. More like the Bisley hammer spur.
