Thinking of the original / classic designs (DA/SA with no rail) - is it reasonable to expect that a leather holster stated as being sized to fit a P220 would also accommodate a 226?

On the one hand, I’m a strong believer in dedicated holsters for specific guns; at the same time, I’ve seen a trend among some makers or brands to list both of these particular models for the same physical holster, including leather ones which is what I’m looking at. I’m currently considering one that is specially labeled as having been crafted for a P220, but I don’t own a 220 to compare to my P226.

Thanks for any input or guidance.

From Sigs web page:

P220 width is 1.3 inch(36mm)
P226 width is 1.5 inch(38MM)

So a P220 should go into a holster for a P226 but it might be slightly loose.

All the Sig Pistols sizes are at this link.

Does not compute.

1.5" is close to 38mm, but 1.3" is approximately 33mm, not 36mm, so something is off.

Well, you'd have to talk to Sig about that discrepancy or typo, just using the numbers they have posted but that is correct 1.3 - 33, 1.4 = 35.56

Possibly. Depends on how closely the trigger guard is molded. They're slightly different. Also the P226 gets wider (obviously) at the rear of the trigger guard where the frame swells for the magazine. So if your particular holster for P220 has material there it may interfere with the P226. MY classic stamped-slide P220 fits in MY classic stamped-slide P226 holster well enough. FWIW

That's overall width, not slide width. Usually the widest bit is across the grips.

A quick update for what it’s worth, the “why” behind the question…also, thanks for all comments on my original post.

I was eyeing a holster for sale on The Big Auction site, said holster being a Milt Sparks Executives Companion IWB marked for a P220. I wound up asking the seller about P226 compatibility and he advised me to note that a P226 was what was in the holster in his photos - DUH on me, the gun had the factory logo grips with the model designation and sure enough, ‘twas a 226, indeed!

I’d had a great experience with this holster some time back with a Browning Hi Power, managed to score this one, and have been enjoying it since. Fit of gun to holster is right on the money.

Shown below with a Magholder, LLC horizontal magazine carrier (another product I’ve been enjoying for a while now).

Classic good looks. Tell us about the magholder. I assume that spring locks into the mag catch cutout... but how does it release? Is it just like a detent that you overcome by pulling the mag out?

Thank you and re: the Magholder, you described it exactly how it works.

I’ve used Magholders for 1911s, Glocks, Browning Hi Powers, and an assortment of SIGs. I found this particular one a little stiffer than most but with practice draws and using it at the range, it’s smoother now while also reliably retaining the magazine.

As much of a Magholder fan as I am, I’m still a bigger fan of leather and have a Galco leather horizontal carrier enroute; I’m looking forward to trying it out soon.

Just an FYI, the Galco horizontal magazine carrier arrived and I’ve had a chance to wear it a bit. While the bulk of my experience carrying a magazine this way is with Magholders, I do prefer the leather construction of the Galco product and find that the split / dual belt loops of the Galco offer me a bit more flexibility placement-wise.

At the end of the day, I do realize that a more standard vertical pouch is usually drama-free haha and I also have a double-pouch that is vertical. My acknowledged nerd-dom is complete, though, as I also use a belt-pouch to pack my iPhone, and a horizontal magazine pouch keeps those two out of each other’s way.

Yes--odds are very high that it will work. My modern P229's fit in my 20+ year old Milt Sparks Versa Max 2 made for my mid-90's SIG P220.

Kydex may be an issue if the holster was made for a pistol with a rail. However, my JM Custom Kydex AIWB 2.0 for a P220 with rail works with my P229's and my non-rail P220.
