Hey interested in getting a CCW/beater. Anyone bought an X-Grades from Aim Surplus? Is it worth it just to spend the extra $80 for the higher grades?

I have seen them advertised. My thought is if they could sell the X as a fully functional no issue firearm they would.

No experience with their handguns, but I bought a couple X-Grade milsurps from AIM back ~15 years ago. Both were in decent shape, just with glaring issues.

One was a Yugoslavian M24/47 Mauser. The metal was in good shape overall but the stock was cracked and the handguard was missing. That was an easy fix at the time, as inexpensive stock sets were still available.

The other was a Russian M44 Mosin-Nagant carbine. At first glance it had the proverbial "sewer pipe" bore, but when I tried to clean it up a bit, it turned out that it was just caked with hardened cosmoline with dirt and debris in it, all of which came out. It ended up with a nice and shiny bore.

Both were worth the money, as I ended up with two nice rifles for noticeably less than the cost of buying a complete and ready-to-go one outright, even factoring in the price of parts and my time.

No idea if these would be worth it, though.

I have bought some cheap/on sale/beater guns before, like my Glock 17 Gen 2 police trade in for only $199 a little while back from Classic Guns,(not bragging just making my point) and while it had some issues with it's looks, it still functioned perfectly and still had tons of life left. When I get a used gun, I always replace every spring I can get to with relative ease for extra insurance and longer life of the gun. You can check on AIM or youtube for videos of the x-grade. I thought I remember seeing a few of the guns they called X-grade and for the money, they didn't look bad, especially for a beater.

I wouldn't be scared to buy one. Provided the frame, slide, and barrel are ok there's not much else that couldn't be easily fixed for cheap. Too bad they're in .40. Frown

Haha yeah I am not a big .40 fan, but do like 357 sig and a barrel swap is pretty easy.

Guess I am just concerned that saving $80 for an X-grade compared to their other offering will cost me more than $80 in the long run.
