Yet another variation on the 92. Little spendy, though.

It appears Beretta following the industry into the dumb naming trends. It looks like a pretty good entry level comp gun and IMO priced competitively for what you’re getting. I am still struggling with the Italian “shark” moniker. Big Grin

Thing is fugly.

I'm getting old, just not into and can't love these new fangled shooting gadgets. I'll take any old Italian 92 over this thing any day.

Regardless of what the word means in another language, 'Squalo' is a horrible choice for the American market.

It sounds like an insult, and it's much to close to 'squalid'

squalid - skwŏl′ĭd

adjective

  • Dirty or deteriorated, especially from poverty or lack of care. synonym: dirty.

  • Morally repulsive; sordid.

The gun looks great, but the marketing department needs a kick the balls, unless, of course, this gun is only going to be sold in Italy. I mean, did ANYONE there speak English? Squalo = squalid to any half literate American and its far to close to squalo = squid than shark even in the ears.

    Squalo = stupido

Well, someone at Beretta came up with "90Two". Both the name and the gun were less than successful.

I'm very glad to see more Berettas with a frame-mounted safety, regardless of what goofy name they use.

Another one for the silly gun monikers thread. Big Grin

Why not call it a Shark? That wouldn't be a terrible name for a gun. I doubt if would be confused with the vacuum cleaner brand.

Already in use by Canik. (Plus, y'know, Italian is more exotic and sophisticated...)

Yep, all those extended controls/mags/magwell sticking out sure are "sleek". Big Grin

The Marketing team must have been in a hurry to get on to their holiday break, and just threw some words at it and called it done.

Gets even sleeker when you put an optic and suppressor height sights on it... Hell, you could pocket carry that baby. Snag free!

Are these actually SAO or just safety-only/no-decock DA/SA like the 92X Performance?

    92XI's are SAO

the hammer on a 92XI doesn't have a DA Hook and the trigger limits the travel.

The 92X performance has a standard hammer, and trigger. But it has a thumb safety with the appropriate sear.

Both use the extreme DLC trigger bar which make them the factory version of a short reset.

SAO on a DA/SA trigger setup so long pull like DA but it's SA. Complete disappointment, honestly, after I handled one. Nowhere near the short pull/short reset of older factory SAO Beretta 92's.

That's exactly my first thought when I saw the name.

These gun makers keep coming out with all of these four figure handguns, and I swear it'll be the lusting, gun-buying public who will be the one living in squalor. Wink

The name makes me think of Squale watches.

I suppose the similarity in Squalo and Squale might be why so many of those watches have sharks on the dial. Big Grin

In my opinion it’s a great looking pistol. Yeah, sure the name is odd but that wouldn’t keep me from buying one if I hadn’t just recently gotten a very similar version with a stainless steel frame.

I kind of want one. Big Grin

    Squale is French for shark.

Both Italian and French are derived from Latin, so many words are similar. In this case, the root word is squalus, which is Latin for a type of small shark, commonly known today as "dogfish".

Same root as the Spanish word for shark: escualo.

My mind went to squall, as opposed to squalid. Squall is a decent name for a gun, I guess; if one must name a gun.
