I typically see something I like & but it … needless to say, this has bitten me in the ass more than once!

When the FN Five-Seven came out I had a PS90 and was interested but didn’t get in on it soon enough, and they skyrocketed in price. Now the PS90 is gone but I a few years back I picked up an AR57 to help me shoot up the almost 2K rounds of ammo I’ve got. So I thinking a Ruger57 & AR57 might make a good combo?

Now Ruger has came out with one, typically around $700 … but is it worth it?

I'm a very long time 5.7 shooter. Worth it is always a tough question. I have several FN's but bought the ruger because it looked like mounting an optic was going to be easy and it is definitely not on the FN. Well it might be easy if you don't want any of the actually decent optics. It still boggles my mind that Ruger doesn't offer an RMR pattern plate and I haven't yet seen one in the aftermarket. The gun itself is fine. Trigger not too bad, safety works like it should and the trigger setup isn't irritating. Like anything shooting 5.7 its got a long grip, but I'm sure you know that. It seems to run fine though given the situation I haven't poured rounds through it. Since I was (eventually am) going to mount a red dot on it I didn't really get too excited about the ruger irons, but I don't like the front if that matters. And on serious guns I never like adjustables in any way, but its not a serious gun to me. I've not seen higher sight choices for when mounting an optic, but I haven't really searched extensively.
For the money, if you want to launch 5.7 at things its a good deal. I had some time finding mags initially but that looks like its not a problem at the moment.
In the end though I think you will be happier with the FN (never mind the price) unless you want an optic.

I shot both the FN and the Ruger side by side. Hands down I preferred the FN. Though recoil is minimal with both, it was much more pronounced with the Ruger. The FN was smoother shooting, had better sights, better trigger and more balanced. That said, there was nothing really wrong with the Ruger I shot. It worked 100% and was accurate.

Threaded barrel for Ruger--$300, for FN $380.

Magazine caoacity--Ruger 20 rounds, FN 20 rounds.

PS90 SBR'd using a DeadAir Mask-- Smile

FN 5.7 suppressed -- Smile

Same here. The Ruger was definitely more snappy than the FN. Also, the mag release on the Ruger is stiffer than on the FN. You can get 30 round mags for the FN, but I think the Ruger is still stuck at 20.

Regarding the PS90, I think they’re back. I’ve seen a couple of new ones on the shelf of my LGS and not seeing any at all for many years.

Ruger just announced a recall for some of those. The pistol will fire with the safety engaged.

It’s associated with a serial number range, so recent production should be past that. Also, even if you find a pistol in the range, the test, according to Ruger, is simply seeing if the hammer drops when you pull the trigger on an unloaded gun with the safety on. If it doesn’t, the gun is fine. This shouldn’t be a problem for someone buying one now.

I went into one of my favorite Pawn Shop/LGS on Wednesday afternoon with no expectations, just looking at the new and used handguns and told the man behind the counter who was unboxing some new inventory, I'd been reading about the Ruger 57 ... he handed me a box with Ruger in big red letters and said I just got two in, take a look!

Short story abbreviated, it went home with me and yesterday I striped, cleaned and I made a trip to the range with it and my AR57 on my M16

I also looked for ammo on line and to say I was stunned is an understatement ... FN 197 ammo I bought when I got my PS90 for $17.99/box of 50 I bought 2K rounds and it has gone up nearly 5x in price! I've always saved my brass and have a 2-liter bottle full; with current ammo prices this may turn out to be only an occasional shooter, it is a great companion to my AR57.

I didn't find it to be particularly snappy although the safety bar on the trigger was a bit uncomfortable, and a couple times the mag release dropped the mag enough it wouldn't chamber the next round, not sure if it was me or the pistol, I made sure it was locked in after the first time but it happened again ... maybe my grip? Now that I'm aware I'll have to pay more attention but it only happened those two times.

I handled one at my LGS but it was sold before I had decided to get one. I ended up snagging one at $599 which was a terrific deal and low market street value. I haven't shot it yet...heck, still in the case. I also have a PS90 SBR and an original FiveseveN IOM with the funky trigger guard. Overall, I think Ruger did a great job...gun feels terrific.

Question: Does the FN Five7 Slide rack as easy as the Ruger Slide? I won a Ruger 57 in a contest but have not shot it yet. I am considering selling it and buying the FN version. I cannot rent the FN at my local range since they do not have ammo for it. I shot the FN version years ago and I liked it. Very soft recoil.

^^ I have the FN and love it. I haven't racked the Ruger (would love to get a chance to shoot one, as I'm considering picking one up) but I never found the FN hard to manipulate.

I don't recall any difference in racking the slide between the two.
