Get my pies outta the oven! |
This girl I’ve known since middle school and is now a FB friend contacted me about advice to buying her first home defense pistol. Once we got past all the newcomer misconceptions about needing a small pistol in a small caliber, I recommended that she grab one of these on Saturday from a gun shop local to her that has had hours-long lines lately due to all the craziness: It looks like they MAY have these in stock according to their website and I told her she can’t go wrong with any of them for a first gun: 1. Glock 17 9mm 2. S&W M&P 9 full size 9mm 3. Walther PPQ M1 full size 9mm I would have recommended a SIG P320 as well but the shop didn’t appear to have any SIG’s in stock. Of course, I told her she needed to get signed up for an NRA certified handgun training course ASAP as well.

Nothing wrong with any of them. Main thing is to familiarize and practice, practice, practice. That goes with any guns, really. Q

All good pistols and it may boil down to what fits her hand/fingers the best but she will most likely not be able to try them out first. At least all three would have changeable back straps to help fit the pistol best for her. M&P may have the option of a safety if that interests her. Good job helping her out. Hope there are some decent choices left for her when she actually gets to the gun store. I hope she understands she can not return the pistol she purchases if she ends up not liking shooting it but of course she can sell it back/trade in to the gun store for probably about half what she paid for it.

I just helped a good buddy of mine buy his first gun, a GLOCK 19. I pretty much always recommend a GLOCK 17 or 19 as a first pistol.

That's just the Flomax talking |
I would suggest the S&W 9 Shield EZ.

I would have if they had it. This particular gun shop does not allow Internet transfers from other places like Gun Broker.

I'd say you did well. The three pistols you recomended are known quantities and qualities, and can be used for multiple roles like training, CC and home defense. I'd recomend that you follow up with her to make sure that she dosen't fall victim to the dreaded gun counter critter. Recently, I gave a young man a recommendation on good ARs to buy as his first rifle and he came back with a .300 BLK from a manufacturer that can't even make it's flagship pistols right.

Just out of curiosity, what rifle did you recommend?

Paddle mag releases are an acquired taste. I like the ones on my HKs, but I also realize I'm among the minority. If the PPQ M2 is in stock, I'd recommend that one over the M1.

Any reason why you didn't suggest a plain old revolver? I don't know anything about your friend, but sometimes simple is better. Mrs. Sigmund's HD gun is an eight shot LCR-22.

The usual brands you see recomended here. Colt if can get it, BCM, DD, Sionics (less known but liked on M4Carbine), Ruger and Smith for value rifles all in 5.56/.223. The store the guy went too actually had at least one of the recomended.

Quit staring at my wife's Butt |
I think I might have went with a g42 they are such soft shooters, then on to a 43x better yet take them out and let them shoot both, nothing wrong with a 17 just on the big side.

Update: She found a Glock 17 tonight! Gun shop in Lancaster Co, PA They are getting VERY hard to find and the prices on Gunbroker are getting crazy. Saw a few for $900

I'm not laughing WITH you |
I think that you should recommend that they buy my book. $15 could keep them from a $500 mistake. https://www.amazon.com/Guns-10...id=1591665758&sr=8-1 Rolan Kraps SASS Regulator Gainesville, Georgia. That rug really tied the room together. |
Yup. A missed opportunity for sure. A Glock 17 is a one shot jammed pistol in an untrained persons hands. Non gun people should always start with a revolver... Go sit at a public range for half a day and you will see jam after jam after jam of newer shooters shooting semi-auto pistols...quality pistols like Beretta, Glock, and Sig.... If its strictly home defense, we should really steer them towards a long gun, like a pistol caliber carbine. ______________________________________________________ Often times a very small man can cast a very large shadow

With the tiny bit of information posted about your friend, recommending any specific make or model doesn’t make any sense at all. People like Tom Greshem and Mark Walters answer this question a few times a week. We’d all do well to heed their advise. This message has been edited. Last edited by: TN Mark,

What I would have done : Recommend that she actually shoot these pistols prior to purchasing. Some ranges have rentals were folks can try out various pistols. My wife did this extensively and settled on a G43. People shouldn't buy a pistol based on "Internet Advice". Some women and older folks have trouble racking the slide on a pistol. That is the idea behind S&W Shield EZ 9 Easy racking slide. All your recommendations are Full Size pistols. What if she has small hands ? Hey, you asked. Now you know. ETA: Don't get married to one particular gunshop's inventory. What if the owner doesn't have enough money for a decent inventory ? What if the owner just doesn't know what to carry ?This message has been edited. Last edited by: DirectDrive,

Not being sexist... but just talking real world... first thing any woman who is new to guns needs to find out is if she has the hand strength to rack the slide on a semi-auto. Most woman can't on anything over 9mm and a lot can't on 9's.... My Native American Name: "Runs with Scissors"

^^^ This^^^ We had to go through four "small 9's" until she found one she could rack the slide. It is a G-43! Sigs P-220, P-226 9mm, & P-230SL (CCW)
