My magazine order from Robertson's Trading Post arrived. The Mec-Gars fit well, but they have about 1/10th of an inch gap between pinky rest and grip frame. The models apparently made for an overseas contract are identical to the one that came with my 6906. They fit just as well as the factory mag. Might get to shoot with them next week; I trust they all will be outstanding but hopefully the Mec-Gars won't bite my pinky.
But first, I need to get some more range use ammo.

If I had enough disposable income, a 5906 with adjustable sights would be in my 9mm harem. I would even live with the stupid magazine disconnector. I just hear the Reservoir Dogs music every time I see one of these.

I saw one dealer (down in GA) on YouTube very recently who had gotten about six 5906s and 6906s in. $350 seems to be the price they were asking. Many of the ones coming up for sale are police trade-ins overseas (Israel, I hear). The one I scopped up in late June had been a safe queen here as it had no markings nor holster wear.

The compact third generation 9MM auto loaders are very fine firearms indeed. I carried one on my ankle as a BUG for many years, but mine was the rounded trigger guard
Aesthetically, the 3rd Generation had some of Smith & Wesson's best looking auto loaders. I am referring to the 3566 Model family. The Compact fits nicely into your thread
The 3566 family was chambered for the powerful 356TSW cartridge. The Performing Center variants could also be purchased with a 2nd barrel chambered for the 9MM cartridge
Then there were the Super 9s.
This is a aftermarket 6904 Super 9. The majority of the Super 9s were in longer barreled pistols
BTW, the Super 9s came with 3 barrels. The two cartridges already mentioned and a third barrel was chambered for 9x21MM

I can only say with certainty that they made TSW models with milled pic rails in the frame in .45ACP and .40s&w for the WV State Police and CA Highway Patrol respectively, as I’ve seen each of those variants in person. I believe that they made some milled rail 5906 TSW models, but I can’t say for certain. In either case, the milled pic rail 3rd gen S&Ws are exceedingly rare, with the add on type rails being much more prevalent amongst TSW models. The WVSP 4566TSWs with milled rails were also coated in black melonite for a finish and carry a pretty hefty price premium when you can find one. Basically, expect to pay at least a slight premium for any TSW model, even with the add on rails, and a larger premium for any models with a milled rail if you find one.

Like I said: Yes, but only to LEOs. Hawaii had several of them, but we're destroyed.
The only ones that ever made it to civilians are LEO trade ins.

Update on my 6906: 300 rounds through it roughly in two range sessions. One failure to feed (Hornady Critical Defense). Very pleasant to shoot. Empties eject straight up or slightly to the right, and not all that forcefully. The MecGars and Robertson's magazines work well (though one is tight). Carried it today but believe the prudent thing to do is have all the springs replaced. Will check with a local gunsmith this week about spring replacement.

The only 3rd Gen Smith I thought was a piece of crap is the 4043. It was adopted by our moron chief after the regional S&W Rep. bribed him with a golf vacation to Hilton Head. The DAO was atrocious, and our female officers could not qualify with it. It had no second strike capability, which was not a requirement but was odd. It appeared to be a scaled up 9mm rushed into production to ride the hot new .40 wave. Its most scary feature was a bad case of "primer wipe" to the point I was certain the action was unlocking way too early and I thought the firing pin tips were going to break. I proposed the adoption of 3906s for female officers and plainclothes but was ignored. We had a hell of time getting rid of them.

S&W originated the .40 S&W cartridge, which is why it's called .40 S&W.
They debuted it in 1990 with the 4006 (DA/SA) and 4046 (DAO), which were built around their new .40 S&W cartridge. They also offered these designs with alloy frames instead of steel as the 4003 (DA/SA) and 4043 (DAO).
So S&W didn't rush these models into production to ride the .40 wave... They made the .40 wave with these models. (With the help of Glock, who also debuted their .40 models in 1990.)
One of the largest of my local police agencies actually hung onto their heavy all-steel 4006s until 2010ish, long after nearly everyone else in the LE world had moved on to polymer striker guns. I witnessed their guys get plenty of crap from from other agencies about their "boat anchors" during my early LE career in the mid-2000s.
