Is the 1911 design suitable for using 10mm?

Would the barrel link be made thicker to handle the higher pressures?

George Washington did what was right. Now it is our time to do the same. Restore the Republic!

There are several successful 1911 manufacturers who seem to think so.

The 1911 makes a great 10mm platform.

Despite many people making them, no, it's not the best option design wise.

(also take into consideration that most people today are shooting a "kinder gentler" 10mm than originally intended)

I have about 2,000 rounds thru a Dan Wesson Razorback. Zero issues. Do i think its the best pistol in terms of durability for the 10mm ?? Nope if i had to pick i would have to go with a Glock 20 for that award. I have no data to support that conclusion, just the fact that Glocks are real durable pistols without alot of 1911 parts that could break from too much 10mm pressure (barrel link, slide stop, etc..) All that being said, my only 10mm left in my collection is my Razorback. I figure that for the 500 to a thousand rounds i out thru it in a given year, i am not worried about the durability.
I will aslo agree that alot of the 10mm i shoot is Fed Am Eagle, PPU, Blazer, all kind of mild stuff. I do shoot sig and Remington thru it but not a ton.
I have no regrets or concerns about shooting anything out of a Razorback. Its about as well built 1911 10mm that is out there.

I am a BIG fan of the 10MM Auto cartridge. I have been shooting and hand loading this fine cartridge since 1990.

Absolutly the 1911 design is just fine for the 10MM Auto cartridge.

I have no idea how many tens of thousands of full power rounds have been put through my Delta Gold Cup since I bought it in the early 1990s

My 7" IAI Longslide has probably had less than a thousand through it.

That is only because I like the 6" long slide that i built shortly after getting the IAI Javelina

No but have 3 in 1911 and have no reservations. Also have 2 S&Ws (1076, 1066) I think are clunky but built like a tank. Have 2 Glocks and a sweet pre-lock S&W revolver.

I have a number of 10mm/ 1911 pistols (number of different brands/barrel lengths).

For the most part they all shoot the 10mm OK ONCE TUNED to work with the bullets/loads that I usually shoot.

Due to the 10mm longer length & magazine requirement it is difficult to get some 10mm bullets to fully clear the slide lock & not occasionally trip the slide lock. It is not a big deal but I have yet to own a 1911 in 10mm that will clear all 10mm bullets all the time with all magazines used until tuned just right.

It IS tuneable to get bullet clearance but something that I have had to work with on some bullet design/ oal combinations.

Same with recoil springs, due to the recoil differences between full power (hunting type loadings) and watered down weaker lower-power practice 10mm ammo I usually need to use different recoil springs between some ammo combinations.

They will usually shoot the high-powered high-pressure stuff with a lighter recoil spring but it beats on the frame/slide pretty darn heavily so isn't recommended for long term usage.

Mine definitely won't shoot the weaker low powered ammo with the heavy recoil springs reliably.

The 10mm 1911 is a great package, just a bit finicky due to the great number of bullet shapes available & due to the big difference in horsepower between lighter 10mm practice ammo & full bore fire breathing hunting loads.

Had an original Colt Delta Elite in 10mm back in the late 80's. Worked 100% Never any issues. Ammo just was too expensive for me to feed it so I traded it for something more affordable to shoot.

10mm 1911 Ruger functions 100% with a variety of ammo. Shoots flat and accurate.

I, too, have the Ruger SR 1911. Really does well indeed, I had an older Colt Delta Elite. The Ruger is far and away better on so many levels than the Colt was. Accuracy, reliability, comfort-you name it. Also, Colt launched fired brass into another zip code.
