One or two or six maybe. The full sized M&P 2.0 series are very well made, and proven performers. Time and experience have pushed me toward a different brand, but that's not because the M&P does anything wrong. The ones I've shot have all been very good, and there are some areas where the M&P exceeds other models, such as fit, finish, and having metal sights from the factory. The 2.0 trigger - as mentioned by others - is a far better system than the original version. The 5906 is a fantastic choice - unless you want a safety in a logical place, a built-in rail, optics cuts, or a gun with a strong aftermarket and holster selection. None of this is to put-down the 5906. It's similar to cars in that it is the tip top of what was available from the US...in the late 80s or early 90s. So if you're the kind of person that still thinks the IROC-Z was the pinnacle of American performance, the 5906 is still available for you. It does all the things you want - has that V8 rumble, bawls the tires at stop lights, and gives you T-tops! And as long as you never put it on the line against a semi-modern car, you'll love it.

Here's a pretty good deal on police surplus M&P 2.0 9mm Performance Center pistols. In addition to all the normal 2.0 goodness, these models have metal frames, mag funnels, Performance Center triggers, 3x extended mags, optic cut slide, and suppressor sights. Intended for competition or duty, but would also make for a great home defense handgun. Retail would be closer to ~$900 new, but these LE trade-ins are available for $649, which is only about $100 more than a basic polymer M&P 2.0 9mm. https://www.sportsmansoutdoors...ducts2.cfm/ID/319936

I do not know all of the latest S&W 9mm double stacks. But I am very content with my 5906.

VERY good deal on a Metal, especially with three of the 23-rounders.

I like the M and P series a lot and shoot my 5” FDE very well, but I have to say that when I pick up the 5906, it is king. Smith knocked it out of the park back with the 3rd gens in build quality and feel. Found mine at a gun show for $375. PD trade-in that was hardly shot and well cared for it seems. Previous owner put on some aftermarket sights that I actually like, and of course it shoots like a dream!

I have several house and shop guns, none are Smith semi autos, do have, or did, (put a few in the safe) a couple smith revolvers, I have a 66 3" near the bed, 228/229/6's for shop/ house pistols, and a few shotguns https://chandlersfirearms.com/chesterfield-armament/

My dad has one. He used it the last few years on his department pistol team before retirement. Wonderful firearm. Brass just dribbles out the side. Plus it came in a real nice aluminum case. For the revolver stages he used a beautiful Power Custom Grand Master.

My only concern with the 5906 is the concern that others have mentioned, is that it has been out of production for at least a decade, and parts availability, if you should need them could be an issue. Me personally I'm a big fan of commonality of training, and in your case would be inclined to go with a full size M&P 2.0. However if you want a DA/SA gun then my recommendation would be a full size in any of the following probably in this order: Sig Sauer P226 Beretta 92 (with G conversion kit for decocker only) CZ 75 (with decocker) All of them are full serviced by their respective companies, substantial parts and magazine availability, and they are proven designs. Furthermore there are plenty of used ones out in the wild, so you could save money in your purchase. Best of luck. This message has been edited. Good point. The three pistols you mentioned are all good quality, 9mm, double stack service sized semi autos. Meaning they provide similar capability to the S&W 5906. Though I would say the 92FS is closer to the 5906 with the DA/SA vs the DAO of the 92D. I would confidentially say that they would all perform similar to the 5906 (I own a 226 and a 92FS). On the parts availability, Numrich arms has some 5906 parts in stock (both used and new) and everyguupart.com occasionally gets one (none right now). Plus given how the 5906 were built and that a number got annual LE servicing, 5906s generally don't require a lot of parts (YMMV).

I have multiples of the 3rd Gen S&Ws. Good choice in either 9MM, .40, or .45. Of course a lot of capacity lost in .45s. 5906 or the 915 model. I purchased multiples of the 915 at bargain prices. Less finish work and single side safety if I recall correctly. But every bit as good gun as the more expensive 5906. Smaller capacity 908 and 910 have some plastic parts that 5906 and 915 models do not have.

For clarity I edited my post, because I meant a Beretta 92F with the G conversion kit for decocker only. To your point S&W ran the 3rd Gen guns for the better part of 25 years, so parts availability, may not be the biggest issue. If it were me, and I was buying one, I would buy extra magazines, recoil spring assemblies, and perhaps a spring kit or two. This thread is turning into a S&W 5906 love-fest I am surprised with this being Sigforum more people haven’t recommended a P226. My personal recommendation would be a Beretta 92 series. I am finding them used under $500. My other recommendation, and not necessarily in second place, is a Beretta PX4. It shoots like a dream. Google “PX4 underrated is an understatement” and an epic thread on Pistol Forum will come up - started by Ernest Langdon and worth the read if you like the PX4. And perhaps they would, had the P226 been produced by S&W instead of Sig. Note the thread title... Best Full-Size Double Stack S&W 9mm
