I have a S&W M&P 9EZ that I’m pretty happy with and was thinking I’d like to look at getting a double stack full-size S&W 9mm next.
What does the Forum recommend?

Best for what?
My favorite is the PPC9, but good luck finding one.

Since you mentioned the EZ 9MM take a look at the full size M&P 2.0 line with the new style trigger like the Shield Plus has. The come in poly frame and metal frame. with compensator and Performance Center models. Lots to choose from.

+1 on the 5906.
If you want current production, the M&P 2.0.

The 5906 is an answer that I would not disagree with. A version with a rail and light may be preferable but difficult to find.

The 5906 is a great choice... until something wears out or breaks.
It's been out of production for over a decade, and S&W no longer has parts and won't work on it.

AIM Surplus has a listing for the 5904 (blued version of the 5906) for $360. 3rd Gen Smiths are getting harder to find.

Can’t argue with the 5906. However…if we are talking about currently available models in the S&W lineup, the M&P 2.0 Metal in 4.25 inch barrel is really, really good.
The 2.0 triggers are light years ahead of the 1.0s, and the size vs capacity is about perfect. The cerakote finish is very durable.
I shoot a Metal Competitor model in Steel Challenge, and carry a Metal 4.25” model about 50% of the time and know them well.

Do you actually require an answer to that question?
Do you actually expect us to believe that you don't understand the meaning of the term?
I have house guns. Any of you guys have house guns?

Lmao!
Entertain me with your vast expertise, Para.
I have carry guns, home defense guns, range guns, competition guns, and, damn, even some safe queens. Can’t say I own a house gun. If it’s a gun that just stays in the house, it fits into one of the categories I just listed.

If it’s just current production for carry, I’d go with an M&P Metal Carry Comp

The term 'house gun' has been in common use for decades. For you to behave as if you don't know what the OP is talking about is not only remarkably obtuse, it's also discourteous. He doesn't have to jump through hoops you set up. You're not helping the man, and this is especially so because your answer is your usual smug crap about how he won't be able to find the special, special pistol you have.

The birth date you have listed in your profile- is this accurate? Because if it is, I have been shooting and handling firearms on a daily basis years before you were even born. You think because you've dumped a train-load of money on fancy pistols, that you're somehow some kind of broad-spectrum expert on firearms and shooting? I don't want to get into a dick measuring contest with you, but I say with great confidence that I have forgotten more about firearms than you'll ever know.
This attitude of yours accounts for a good part of the problem I have with your behavior in this forum.

Again, either you know what the man means and you're simply behaving like a dick to him, or you're not nearly as well informed as you obviously consider yourself to be.
There is no justifiable reason for you to behave this way.

I don't know about the 5906, but I have the .40 version (4046) which was my first issued weapon at my current department. This thing is a beast.
Not minority enough!

If the EZ rack slide is important to you, then consider S&W's Equalizer, which has greater capacity than the 9EZ, although it still falls under compact or subcompact size.
Otherwise, S&W has many full size M&P M2.0 variants. A basic full size M&P 9mm is pretty reasonably priced, and I bet there will be some good deals on them around Black Friday.
I like 3rd Gen S&W semiautos too, but I infer that if PASig is happy w/ his M&P9 EZ, then he probably wants something more similar to it than a hammer-fired gun.

An M&P is an M&P is an M&P. They're fundamentally all the same, and one isn't better than the other. Different models offer different feature sets, so if you're looking for it to perform a particular function that might be a factor, but none of that makes one intrinsically "better" than another.
A couple of years back my buddy went out and bought a fancy Performance Center M&P 9L. IIRC he paid about twice as much as one would for a normal M&P. I shot it, and honestly the experience was no different than shooting a regular old run-of-the-mill M&P. Same controls, same goofy grip, same crummy trigger. He was enamored with it for a little bit but these days for fun at the range he just brings a P320. For what he's doing with it he'd have been money ahead to just buy the base model...or better yet a P320.
Personally, if I wanted an S&W to keep around the house and shoot occasionally, I'd do what others have suggested and get a 5906 (or one of those AIM Surplus 5904s that YooperSigs mentioned in his post...can't beat that price!). Better trigger, heavier construction, smoother action, and a little bit of nostalgia thrown in there as well. Yeah they're discontinued, but they made a million of them and there are plenty of places to get parts if you need them. A house gun isn't likely to get broken or chew through parts anyway.

Hear, hear! Thank you voice of reason! Accurate, all steel, fairly sleek for what it is, and a very soft shooter.
