Knowing what I know now, the SIG 226, CZ75, Beretta 92 or the AP80. The OP said nothing about availability. Not knowing what I know now, a custom BHP or a Steyr P18.

You could, however, buy the Tanfoglio TZ75 which was basically a clone of the CZ75.
They were excellent handguns for their time; sturdy, accurate, reliable and with decent triggers.

What 9mm Duty Ammo was there in 1983? Black Talon was later IIRC, was 9BPLE even out in 1983? I was younger back then and mostly into 1911’s and rifles but remember pistols being more apt to choke on hollow points back in those days.

Would you have been able to get one of those in 1983? Didn't they JUST come out that year and only for the Austrian armed forces?

Sig P220. I would have gone with a CZ75 or Beretta 92, but that was before the era of quality 9mm ammunition. Given the potential for questionable performance, I'd rather make a bigger hole.

Nope, as stated earlier in the thread, they didn't start exporting them until 1986. If the thread specified 1986, that would have been my pick as I have one of those early exports and carry it.

Interesting question. I'm kind of torn on this one. I'm thinking either the Sig P220 .45ACP loaded with the flying ashtray (if available then...otherwise, probably Super Vel or STHP) or a Browning Hi-Power, loaded with Super Vel (I think the 9BPLE came later).

Now that I think about it, I think the Hi-Power would win since it fits my hand better than the Sig. Plus, I think it might be a tad easier to conceal if that was a requirement.
