No, this is not a classified post, but this will help me build it.
I've got a pair of P228 "zipperback" 13-rounders that came with one of the P228s I've had over the years. I still have a West German P228, but I've got PLENTY of 15-round MecGars for it.
Any reason - collectibility, say? - that I should keep the old 13-shot magazines, or should I just let them go to the internet?

Completely personal preference. Me, I like to have the German mags for my German P226's, P228's, and P229's. I have plenty of the factory and aftermarker Mec-Gar but there is something about the German ones I like. Maybe it reminds me of when I got into Sig's and they were all German, from the folded slides to the zipperback or dovetailed magazines.
I actually think the Mec-Gar mags are a little better quality feeling, nice smooth magazine bodies and stronger springs, but the German ones kind of complete the package for me.

With all of my zipper backed 226, I got wolff spring replacements.

The zipper-back mags are OEM, period-correct, and out of production. Unless the amount space two mags occupy seriously bothers you, I would keep them. If/when you sell/trade/gift your P228, having the factory original mags will sometimes increase the value; it will never hurt it.

I too would recommend you keep them. On the other hand if you want to sell or trade I would love to have them. I prefer the german magazines for german pistols. I currently do not have any zipper back magazines for my German 229 on the 9mm 228 frame.
Keep your weapon handy, live free and prosper.
