I have a Sig 238 that the slide very seldom hold's open after the last round is fired. I have tried 5 or 6 different mag's with the same result. Is this a common problem or should I call Sig?????

It’s not a common problem with the P238, so yes, call SIG CS. My P238 has functioned flawlessly after a few early-on break-in issues.

Afterthought – maybe some lube on the slide latch lever (and its pivot shaft) might help. My P238 was entirely devoid of lube out of the box.

Are you being mindful of the slide catch lever during firing and not inadvertently riding or contacting it during firing?

This is even more of an issue with smaller pistols.

Try watching your grip and/or have someone else fire your pistol before contacting SIG.

After looking at the slide catch with the slide back it doesn't go all the way into the notch of the slide. It seem's to hang up. Should I try to fix it myself or send to Sig?

Send it to Sig.

Called Sig and got a shipping label. I'll let them figure out what is wrong with it.....

That's probably the best solution, but one thing you could try first is to replace the slide stop spring.

It’s the mag follower that pushes up the slide latch lever up after the last round is fired, not the slide latch spring. The OP said that 5 or 6 mags had been tried.

With the slide off, no mag in the pistol, and the slide latch lever reinserted, does the slide latch lever move freely? Maybe the slide latch lever is bent (SIG CS would probably send you a new one for free). Or devoid of lube, as I suggested in my earlier post.

Oops. You're right -- I'm wrong.

I had it exactly backwards. The slide stop spring doesn't hold the slide latch up; in fact, the slide stop spring keeps the slide latch lever DOWN until the mag follower pushes it UP.

My bad.

Is your mag follower smooth or does it have a nipple on it?

All the follower's have the nipple on them...

To ensure it is not your grip shoot gun left handed with left hand only. If it locks back it is your grip.
Myself personally I would not consider locking back on empty a significant enough problem to send a gun back.
Locking back with ammo remaining is a much bigger problem

Not an issue on my 7 year old 238
