Looking to the experts on 228s. I have an AJU P228 with a manufacture date of August 2012. I bought it new years ago, after retiring from the army. The pistol only accepts 228 mags and came in a black case. No proof marks, but slide is stamped made in Germany. I’m curious how many were made and how rare these may be. Reason being is that my agency has recently permitted POW carry on duty, and I am considering carrying this as a daily duty weapon. I have heard that many do not consider these a true 228; does that diminish the value? I just received it back from Sig who added an SRT trigger and X-ray sights (just personal preference). Also considering adding a threaded barrel. Any thoughts/info is appreciated.

I wouldn't worry about it if its from 2012 and has a true German stamped carbon steel slide honestly its newer and better than the full proofed ones imho for use.

If you're thinking duty mmmm....

You may want to make sure you get backup parts such as but perhaps not all inclusive: extra barrels for 228/229(not 229-1), rolls pins, short extractors and firing pins (also I believe different from current SIG production and only made by one place aftermarket online that I know of)


My P228 I bought in 2001 has no proofmarks and came in a black box when I bought it new.

Mine has a stamped carbon steel slide and says Made in Germany on the side.

It's as nice as my other Made in Germany carbon steel slides with proof marks SIGs so I wouldn't worry about quality.

P228s in good condition are a little harder to find than most new guns.

I bet you could use it no worries about it becoming a retirement plan.

You could (should) get Mec-Gar magazines for the P228/P229 (not the P229-1 ones) they hold more rounds and fit in the same envelope.

OR you could buy a new SIG M11A1 (it says P228 on the grips) or a 9mm P229

M11A1 iirc is a P229-1 (not P228/P229) under the nametag with a long extractor and the bigger magazine well, if so it'd be easier to get most parts.

PS Greg Cote's site has tons of good deals on all sorts of magazines, and additional types for that P228 you have, one particular that holds 18 rounds and also nickel variants.

OP, yours is a bona-fide P228. Just because it was assembled at SIG NH (hence no proof marks) doesn't make it any less P228 than ones that were assembled and proofed in Germany. Rare? Absolutely not.

The AJU, AHU and AKU P228s are among the last of the P228s ever made, the last one rolled off the assembly line in NH in April 2013.

I carried a P228 as a duty weapon for quite a few years. Only approved weapons at my current agency now are striker fired but still have it and carry it off duty at times. My all time favorite.

Thanks for the input. As for magazines, I have lots!! I’ve got several Mec-gar mags, lots of sig mags I’ve. I’ll post some pics later.

Carrying a P228 is perfectly fine. As you replace more and more parts, make sure they’re working together properly. As mentioned earlier, parts are getting harder to find, and things like an extractor or whole breech block are non-existent.

Frankly, IMO the P229 is a better pistol. As mentioned before, the M11-A1 is a P229 that is marked P228 if that matters to you.

You already had Sig change it from it's original as-shipped configuration by adding the SRT and X-Ray sights, so you shouldn't be worried about collector value at this point. It's a user. Great advice from what some of the others have posted with regard to having spare parts on hand to ensure you have a well maintained duty pistol.

FYI, 226 mags function in a 228. They will extend slightly.

Unless you're insider with access to production records, forget about it. Why even bother? Regular blued P228s are extremely common.

Well, to some extent your correct, I have made 2 modifications. However, still have the original parts and the gun was like new to begin with. So I guess I'm not overly concerned.

As for comments regarding M11-A1, I have one of those as well, but won't use it as a duty. My M11 was a custom engraved retirement gun with gold engaged badge, name, and years of service.

As or getting another gun for duty, that was a plan until the wife greenlighted a new MCX. So I need to wait a bit before pushing for a new toy.
