I have an older German frame P229 in .40. Out here (and I think everywhere now...) no one wants .40...

Just because something is legal to do doesn't mean it is the smart thing to do.

At my age I need to be selling guns BUT, if I was to buy anymore I am leaning towards the .40s.

Being in the down hill side of life, I kinda quit buying and trading my pistols. Now, I cannot even find some parts for the P series Sigs that I still have.

Start a thread; tell people what you need. There's a good chance someone here can tell you where to find what you're looking for.

Welcome to the forum.

I agree. I have a lot of old SIG clutter laying around. Just came from doing an Armslist trade, got another old W. German P220, probably going to grab an old P226 in an hour too. They're out there and some come with lots of extras.

In a 2 week span i found 2 P225A1's at one of my local shops both unfired with an extra mag. Jumped on both and then ordered 5 more mags from MWGW. Spent about $1300 on the 2 guns and the mags. SRT triggers and night sights on both. They are great 9mm's and the 8+1 capacity is of no consequence to me here in deep blue CT.
Other than this streak of luck my other classics i have found here on the forum and occasionally a couple will pop up in one of the local shops.
I do see more .45's and .40's in the used case than 9mm's. As somone else mentioned i see new Legions more frequently than other regular classic P series. When i do see a Legion its almost always a 9mm, .45 or 10mm. Not .40.

When I bought my P229 Legion a few months ago I was specifically looking for a .40 because of the ability to run 3 calibers just by swapping out slides/barrels/mags. (40SW, 357SIG, 9mm). Since SIG had all but dropped all support for 40/357, the most practical way this was possible was to buy one on the used/old new stock market as it was far easier to buy a 9mm slide than a 40 slide after the fact.

As annoying as the marketing hype of the Legion series is, the pistol itself I found to be outstanding. Came zeroed at 25 yards out of the box, and so was the 9mm slide/barrel combo I put together. Whatever they did to the frame is enough to make this P229 much more ergonomic in my hands compared to my legacy, half height slide serration P229 I've had since years ago. Plus it doesn't look half bad either.

But yes, the classic P series are virtually impossible to find around here, and even on many of the big online retailers. SIG is clearly focusing on the P320 and the Legion variants of the P-series guns.

It's more of SIG doesn't make regular classsic P Series SIGs anymore, they've steadily decreased their catalog options down to 1911's and stuff based on P3XX polymer stuff.

You're not going to find new cheap classic SIGs anymore, just aren't made.

I'd suggest gunbroker.com, armslist.com, etc and buy up used SIG Classics that can still be found for decent (700ish) prices sometimes

I half remember seeing what they were making in 2021 and it was tons of P320 types, P365 types, one type of 229 and P226 "Elite", the legion types, think only P220 legions, I'd say SIG is phasing out the "Classic" type SIGs if I was a betting man

Which is a shame because the P229 makes for an excellent, relatively soft-shooting .40 platform. My 'soft & weak' P229 is my favorite shooting .40.

Why sell a 'plain' P226 for $900 when you can sell a $1200 P226 Legion during this gun buying frenzy.

I have also seen the dearth of plain 226's. There are some Mk25's on GB, but, they are usually at a premium asking price.

Keep looking, some classic P- series do pop up on occasion. Unfortunately, the prices reflect the current situation.

On this forum sometime ago I wrote that the Classic P series Sigs would someday go the way of the third generation Smith semi autos. A buddy of mine found a new in the box Smith 945 the other day. I had 2 versions back in 01. I looked at it and it was just an incredible master piece of production. The companies just can't spend the time or the materials on such an item anymore and put it out at a price anyone is willing to pay. 25 years ago who could have imagined that the Sig P226 would go the way of the dinosaur ? Or the Sig P220 ? They will. The power of plastic and profit makes companies do funny things.

I picked up what must have been one of the last ones in that batch. They were apparently selling a bunch of guns with the same photo and description. Mine wasn't quite as clean as the one pictured, but was more-or-less what I expected for a police trade and not at all bad for the price. A raid on my parts box, $60 for parts I didn't have already, and a few hours of work later... I now have a nice "beater" P228 in DA/SA with all new springs where it matters.

The slide is loose, it rattles a bit and the finish is beat up, but it shoots perfectly fine, is still more accurate than I am, and I like the balance quite a bit. I will still be keeping my eye out for a nicer P228 someday, but this filled the last slot in my modest "collection" of the old P-series SIGs.

It could be regional. I saw a W. German P226 at a gun store about two months ago for $700. I had already given mine to my nephew and I'm not nostalgic for one except the one I gave away. It was my first gun and I had the action worked and had the SRT installed.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." I’m hoping that a new or used 226 finds it’s way into a LGS soon. I’m checking on a weekly basis.

I can see production trailing off for the classic P-series stuff, but I see parts support continuing in some fashion for at least another decade or more. There are literally hundreds of thousands of them in circulation, and while aftermarket support isn’t on the same plane as other platforms, it’s definitely there.

If you want to pay good prices, get them now while you can. If you want one in a few years, they’ll be out there, just at higher prices. Just my 2¢.

Last month I went into a usually overpriced LGS on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. They had a 1996 228, no box 1 hicap mag one 10 rounder for $529. It was 20 minutes before closing so I hoped for the best and went back Black Friday morning. Scored a $50 gift card for being one of the 1st 20 customers. It had a few more finish marks than I thought but you just don't see these any more.So now I have three 228s that I rarely shoot. And that is just fine. I'll beat the piss out of my Glocks and just enjoy looking at my Sigs.

Damnit, no. I'm near Philly this week. And I just bought two SIGs last weekend and probably another Marshall amp tomorrow. Must resist.

As a quick aside, as I've been reading this thread I've been covertly checking that auction site to see if I could grab a last minute Christmas gift and it seems that the four P226 Legion DA/SAs listed got scooped up.

I hope one of our members at leat got one of them. Smile

I just picked up a 365XL at a local lgs last week. While waiting for my background check to go through I noticed they had one 228 and two 225's in the display case. I did not see the pricing but was surprised that they had them.
