There was an article in the paper this am that the city is trading in their 229R DAK .40's for 140 new 9mm 320's. The city is paying $81,500 for the pistols.
There is currently 70k rounds of .40 on hand that will be traded in for credit. In January, 110K rounds of 9mm was purchased.
Officers can purchase their 40's for $320 and the others will be traded in for $365 in credit.

The same thing needs to happen at the Memphis PD. Qualification scores would skyrocket. In 2021, they should not be carrying Sig 229 DAK .40s.

According to my calculator, that is $582 per P320. I would have thought they could get a better price.

That does seem high for an agency purchase. I bet that price includes extras- like extra magazines, maybe training for so many armorers, spare parts, etc.

Yep, and don't forget holsters. That's easily another $100 per officer. Seems like a pretty reasonable deal.

Holsters, parts, support, etc. Think about when YOU buy a new gun/platform how much extra do you as an individual spend for a holster or holsters addition magazines and or parts etc. My guess is we all dump at least another couple hundred on average. Agency wide is no different they just build the price into the per gun unit price.

The article is likely reporting what the city has listed on their budget for the purchase.
When I did ours, it includes the pistol, extra magazines, holsters, mag carriers, WML, and transitional training.
Not saying they are purchasing the same, but anything needed or required for the purchase is part of that line item.
The total for ours was $62k and some change, for 35 weapons and all the trimmings. Broken down it was less than $400 per weapon, which included night sights and three mags. These figures were in 2016. In all fairness I did pad the numbers a bit cause myself and the other instructors were against department issued pistols.

Good point on the qualification scores improving. I had my M18/320 (M18 FCU w/ Compact conv kit) out to the range last Friday. Among the five pistols I took, the P320 was the clear winner for group size, and easy to disassemble and clean when I returned. The only downside I can think of is I need another FCU

Yay! If that means that trade in .40 DAK's and ammo will become available to people who can appreciate them, Yay!
And I agree, in this 2021 culture-canceling, diversity and inclusive hiring practice era, they should not be carrying .40 DAK's.
Shifting to 9MM P320's may improve qualifying scores significantly, BUT if they shifted to .32 ACP chambered full size P320's, THEN qualifying scores would skyrocket.
Our European law enforcement brethren historically were just fine with .32 ACP. Enough demand for .32 ACP would help to lower cost of production, too, so we could enjoy our trade in Beretta 81's more often. This message has been edited. Last edited by: RichardC,

Damn.... I must have really hit a nerve. Glad I didn't say more. You would have labeled me as a card carrying member of the Communist Party.
I believe it's a safe bet to say the P-229 DAK is not the future of Police service weapons. I actually don't have a problem with .40 caliber. If they switched to the P320 in either .40 or 9mm, the qualification scores would skyrocket.

Oh, I'm not offended, far from it. I see this as opportunity. I've really been enjoying my trade in DAK .40 S&W pistols and .32 ACP Model 81, this past year and a half, and I have a couple month's worth of ammo left.

LOL.... I didn't really think you were. I do know some can shoot the DAK very well. I believe the biggest issue is going back and forth between it and other platforms. I know people that start to really get the hang of the DAK, then start shooting other platforms with those short fast resetting triggers, then go back to the DAK and suck again. I believe if someone likes the trigger system and stays with it, it's a good option. I have a couple of P229s .40s in DA/SA that I will never get rid of. These are some of the most reliable and accurate pistols ever made.

I ignore the short reset on the DAK's.
Its similar to shooting my revolvers DA, which I like to do.

Our agency price on P320C's in 9mm in 2018 was $350. The market is so hot for those guns right now that they're offering us $325 in trade credit per gun if we upgrade to the Pro Carry.
What, me worry?

The OH state patrol switched to the P320. Have talked to several troopers. Not one has a bad thing to say about the switch. They were carrying P226 in .40. It's not about the caliber it's the gun they like. Most have stated that the qualifying score have went up.
