After going a looooooooooooooooooooong time without purchasing any firearms I pulled the trigger on two 22lr pistols I have wanted for a long time. My boy is finally old enough to join me on the range. I decided it was time to pull the trigger on two pistols that would be a fantastic entry for my son into the wonderful world of shooting.

A Ruger MKIV (I originally wanted a MKIII but the newer version won me over) and a Browning Buckmark with the top rail and almost triangular shaped barrel are coming home next week! Smile

I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas as it rapidly approaches. Big Grin

I’ll post up pics next week.

Nice scores! It’s always a good feeling when you score one of those grail guns.

You’ll have to post pics when you get them.

Congrats! You're going to love that Ruger. I have a MkII stainless target, and it's probably the most accurate handgun I own. It's also more reliable than a semi-automatic rimfire weapon has a right to be. I'm not sure how they did it, but it runs like a top, even with the cheapest bulk ammo that chokes in anything else.

I'd never really considered them as an option because I thought they looked kind of goofy, but I stumbled across one for a deal that I couldn't pass up, and I'm glad I did. It's a great shooter, and in true Ruger fashion, it's built like a tank. It's become one of my favorite handguns that I own.

Takedown on the MkII takes a little getting used to, but once you know how to do it it's pretty easy. It's a total non-issue with the mk IV, though, as the takedown process has been greatly simplified.

I think you're going to be very happy with your purchase. Looking forward to your range report...should be interesting to compare it to the Buckmark. I don't own one of those, and it's been years since I'veq shot one, but I remember it being a good shooter as well.

Me too. I'm probably one of the few who hasn't owned a Ruger .22 for some reason.

Both those pistols are great plinkers. The Buckmark will be slightly more ammo sensitive though.

On the Browning there is a screw that holds the upper assembly in some manner. My Browning buddies had issues with that screw coming loose on a kinda regular basis. I would locative the hell out of that.

I've never had an issue with that screw and have many many thousands of rounds through mine. But the site base screws do have a tendency to loosen after several hundred rounds, so I bring the allen key with me to the range.

I love my buckmark and the OP will love his, they're such a dream to shoot.

I really don’t know what screw it was but the Browning guys had issues on a regular basis. They are nice shooting guns but my anecdotal experience is that the OP will have far less issues with his new Ruger. Watching those guys always made me glad I went Ruger.

My grandfather had a Buckmark. Many years ago he let me borrow it for a few months and I do vaguely remember it being easier to clean than the horrific MKII but I don’t recall any issues with any screw.

I have fond memories of that pistol which is why I finally decided to get one for myself. Smile

Absolutely LOVED my Buckmark 7.5" barrel target gun. Super accurate and a joy to shoot.
But, since I'm a gun cleaning nut, I soon found the rear screw (steel ) screws into the alloy frame and one must be very careful to not overtighten it.
I used a bore snake and spray cleaners for a while, and they work pretty darn well, but I'm a take it all apart and clean every piece kind of guy, so we parted ways.
BUT......it's still a sweet shooter!

Enjoy it!

Be sure to use blue (medium) Loctite if you are going to do it, so you can take it apart later

Had a III nice pistol with the Volquartsen add ons, picked up a IV and like it quite a bit, especially when it comes time to clean and reassemble... the difference is Night and Day...

I actually pulled the trigger on three new plinkers. That shade of purple was just too tempting to pass up. Big Grin I just recently fell in love again with shooting thanks to my son and his persistence at wanting to shoot his BB gun in the back yard.

I showed him an online pic of the purple MKIV and said what do you think about this? His response “WHOA! You’re buying that right!?” Big Grin I know it’s a bit ehh obnoxious in that shade or purple but hell, I do kind of like it.

It’s been almost ten years since I was active in this section of the forum. My friends, I am back! Smile

I love that back MkIV! I've been looking at that exact model with the threaded barrel and contemplating whether or not it's time for me to get into suppressors...
