Ok, I know we don't get a lot of these but there is a lot of knowledge on this forum. A friend of mine at my urging bought a S&W 9mm Performance Center revolver.

He would like to replace the hammer with the old style wide "spur" hammer so his thumb can more easily cock the hammer for SA. I have tried Midway and Natchez but can not seem to find what he is looking for. Any suggestions?

If you are going to try and switch out the hammer you would be better served having the Performance Center do it for you. S&W Performance Center smoothes and polishes the actions and throwing in a different hammer might make a noticeable difference.

Anyway, with a little practice the narrower hammer spur won't even be noticed. Smile

There's really no time in self defense or competition when cocking the hammer is appropriate, so it's only for fun on the range. If I were going to modify the hammer, I'd probably focus on making it snag-free with a bobbed hammer, before I went for a bigger hammer spur. The only place that really helps is shooting single action pistols such as a Blackhawk.

On a little 9mm, I'd spend my time practicing double action shots and if investing, get trigger work done (or buy more ammunition). A wider hammer spur on that 9mm pistol would seem to me to be counterproductive.

.500" wide target hammer.

You'll have less lucking finding one used since it's a new gun. Call S&W.

That will be a challenge.
A recent gun will have a MIM hammer with flat face striking a frame firing pin. An old "forged" target hammer won't work.

Is there a recent production Smith with target hammer of the new design? I don't know. You might look through the S&W catalog for yourself.

This ... Old hammers are not compatible with new revolvers. I would call S&W. They have always proven to be very helpful. There is a store in the Springfield headquarters to sell parts and accessories.

Sigs, Glocks, 1911s, M&Ps ... well, you get the point!

I could not agree more.
I bought a new Talo 686+ and sent it to S&W Performance Center for a polish and trigger job.

They did great work...
