YooperSigsOptics on Pistols - Old Dog, New Trick.
My eyesight is not so good. So I have been trying to adapt to an optic sighted gun. Thus far, my main issue has been "chasing the dot". But I have found two things that have helped me considerably:
1- Circle and Dot Reticle. The larger circle makes the chasing drastically reduced. And green seems to work better for me. Now have two Holosun SCSs mounted on a G20 and a PDP.
2- I ran across an outfit online called Grip Keeper. They make a variety of handgun grip trainers in the form of an exact replica of your chosen pistol. Losts of popular models are offered. They also make a full-size trainer gun that has a magnetic insert in the slide that allows for attachment of an optic. So I bought a PDP trainer with the magnets and the cheapest Crimson Trace optic I could find. And this combination has allowed me to greatly improve my speed in picking up the dot and making a quick presentation without chasing the dot. Bonus: you can practice at home without ammo and in complete safety. The trainer gun even has a functional (but crappy) trigger! I have been watching quite a few Police body cam shootings and increasingly, optics seem to be getting quick hits in the real world. I am not quite at the full confidence I need to EDC an optic but I am getting there.

Rey HRHHere's what I have learned. It's muscle memory for the most part which I haven't mastered yet. But part of seeing the red dot faster is I look to grip the gun to align the iron sights properly, I look for the iron sights aligned close enough and the red dot is right on top of the sights ad I just transition to the red dot.
It should be easier for you if you've been shooting iron sights for a long time. I suppose it's like you're using the iron sights as training wheels to position the red dot where it should be.

captain127The key is a well executed throughly practiced draw stroke. You focus on the target and bring the gun and dot into view, you do not focus on the gun dot and bring it to target.

pedropcolaYup. My brother in law fought that urge to “cowitness” and lost. He finally bought a gun that had no irons at all. For him that was the solution.

Practice bringing gun sight into your view of the target slowly and repeatedly without firing. A lot.
Then do it some more. Then shoot another gun, and after a session of that, go back to the optic firearm. And do it again. Keep doing this.
As you progress, increase your speed in bring the sight into the picture. You will soon start "finding the dot" naturally.
When you start liking it like a meth habit, start shooting.
Before you know it, it will be just what you do.
