What influences "gassiness"?...

It HURT, and wasn't even with a rifle. On another weapon I've had my eye nearest the ejection port water so bad with the ammonia vapor that I couldn't see out of it for a minute or so.

Well...what were they?

Mine -- LWRC IC 14.5" upper. Surefire SOCOM 308 mini RC2 suppressor. Factory ammo -- generally Federal GMM 69 or American Eagle FMJ 55. I have a touch over 2,000 rounds down the pipe. I last shot it in March, with the results in a 10-round rifle accuracy thread.

One was a suppressed 226 of all things. I was shocked how much I felt blasting me in the face at arm’s length. The other was a suppressed AUG.

Many years ago, there were Sigforum shoots in NE Colorado, coordinated by a SF dealer (Ryan IIRC). These shoots provided my first experience with cans. I shot a Sig P226 in 9mm, a Glock 17, and an H&K in 45ACP. I don't know the brand(s) of suppressors, and I don't know which H&K model. We shot cans dry, and wet with small amounts of water. Great experience, and I recall no rear gas blasting on any of the shots. I don't recall blast comments from other shooters, either.

I few years later I shot some suppressed pistol at a local indoor range, with the can wet from water. I did get a few black spots on my shooting glasses, however I didn't notice the spots until after shooting, when cleaning my glasses. I definitely did not feel anything on my face.

I've fondled a couple of AUGs, but never shot them. I have no desire to own one, as I'll take my ARs any day. It's my understanding that an AUG isn't the best platform for suppression.

Changing the loads on the P226 to ones using much faster burning powder removed the issue. The AUG was helped by using a suppressor gas plug, though it didn't go away completely.
