I’m looking at .30 cal suppressors and found one I like. The description said it’s a light duty can and to keep it under 750 degrees. So….how do I know if it’s 750 degrees?

I’ll be using it on a 300 blackout pistol and maybe a 308 bolt gun in the future. I won’t be doing mag dumps or anything. There are some cheaper ones that are full auto rated but the reviews say sound suppression isn’t the greatest with the ones I’ve looked at. The super quiet full auto rated ones are more than I want to spend. This is kind of in the middle of those. So those with experience- how important is the full auto rating?

I haven’t tried it, but I wonder if one of those thermal-gun type thermometers would give an idea on a can’s outer temperature.

Every can, like every gun, has its limits. Griffen Armament made a video showing off their full auto rated Paladin/Alpha 300 HD on a M240B making it to about 700 rounds before experiencing a catastrophic failure.

I prefer FA rated cans solely for a manufacturer warrantying their product being capable of handling high rates of fire. In your case, it sounds like the less expensive non-FA rated can would meet your needs.

IR temp sensors are very inexpensive.

For what you are describing I don't see the need for a full auto rated can. For a bolt gun, you certainly don't need it. 300blk subsonic ammo won't heat up a barrel like supersonic will. You won't approach glowing hot 750°+ degrees until about after 2 or 3 mag dumps/60 to 90+ rounds of supersonic ammo. If you really want to know for sure, pickup a thermoworks IR gun.

The good news is, you really don't want or need a high tech can for 300blk or bolt guns, the traditional baffle cans work great for those two applications.

Most of the development the last three years in low back pressure/flowthru and heavy duty materials like Inconel and Haynes 282 are really only beneficial for semi-auto and supersonic ammo.
