My 10.5" is so over gassed, it's unpleasant to shoot with the CMMG can on it. I watched every review of charging handles I could find and the Precision Reflex kept coming up in the top.
It was the LEAST tactical looking of them that complimented my vintage look I love so much.
I bought it from MidwayUSA and it was here in less than a week. I added a 10/22 bolt catch and got free shipping.

What about swapping out the gas tube? Maybe swapping to a BRT reduced volume gas tube would help by reducing the gas that even makes it to the internal piston in the BCG.

I misread your post to say that the reflex was the best for gas busting. My point was that the Reflex didn’t even make the top three in this comparison. I wasn’t aware that looks was your primary metric.

your not going to get much done via the charging handle. Gas tube is one good option or get a better suppressor is the best choice.

I’ll quickly admit I’m a novice to this sort of technical analysis. That said… I’ve been under the impression that the charging handle was simply a tool for the shooter to use when pulling the BCG back.

But now it seems like the charging handle has something to do with gas management? I’m confused; please educate me.

I have a better suppressor, however it is 10" long. It has almost no blowback, but I wanted the 1970's look and the GMMG fit the bill. All the other welded steel baffle stack cans work the same. The venting cans just look wrong on the vintage style rifle.

This gas abating handle works satisfactory while maintaining the aesthetics I desire.

It made a HUGE difference. You can see it venting out its port.

Your original understanding is more or less correct. However, when you suppress an AR with a traditional style can, you’re often introducing a lot more gas back into the receiver than what it needs to cycle correctly. This can go everywhere, usually “frosting” the top of the magazine and the next rounds in it, cover the carrier, the inside of the lower, etc, but where you really notice it as a shooter is when it vents out the gaps between the charging handle and the recess in the upper it rides in straight into your eyes and nose. Those gases contain a lot of fun stuff, including ammonia, which will make your eyes burn and your lungs say “we ain’t breathing that.” Some people use RTV silicon gasket to seal these gaps and that can work ok, but a charging handle with a vent milled into it to shoot the excess gases to the right of the receiver is the more permanent traditional solution. Now there’s all kinds of ways of dealing with as far as parts, but that’s usually the cheapest and easiest change.

Some of my favorites that seem to do a good job are the Geissele Airborne and the Radian Raptor SD.
