I’m looking for the best cover to mitigate the so-called mirage effects of heat from a suppressor. Although it’s not labeled, I believe the one I currently have for a TBAC 30P-1 is by Armageddon Gear, and it works pretty well, but I would like something that’s more effective. With my newest rifle it takes only a few rounds of 6.5 Creedmoor to affect the viewing at 25×. I’ve tried to research the question, and most discussions focus on how much heat a cover can take before failing. That focuses on volume and rates of fire which aren’t my concern. I use my can only on bolt action rifles chambered for 223, 6.5 CM, and 308, and a high rate of fire for me is 10 rounds in a couple of minutes. I’m not interested in how much heat a cover can take before being destroyed, but how it handles the heat. I’m also not concerned about differences in price; if I’m willing to spend $100 for a cover, an extra $25-30 is insignificant. Any comments about heat waves from the barrel are also welcome. My newest rifle that I’m getting the most noticeable effects has a 24 inch barrel as does the Tikka TAC A1 which doesn’t seem to cause the same mirage effects. The TAC has a handguard that covers part of the barrel, but most of the barrel forward of the scope sunshade is still open. And, yes: I did search here on the forum, but did not find any discussion of what I am asking. If I missed something, please let me know. Thanks for all replies. “Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools, because they have to say something.” — Plato

While I haven't used their suppressor covers, I've used a number of other Cole-Tac products, and they are good quality. Looks like they have five different covers, for various uses/levels of heat protection:

Thanks. Even the AI Gemini recommended the Cole-Tac HTP although in that line the Corset has the highest temperature tolerance rating. But as I say, my question is how do they retain the heat to minimize “mirage” effects? Creedmoor Sports is the only vendor I’ve seen that claims a specific mirage reduction effect, but the description of the cover itself doesn’t make it seem any different in that regard than the Cole-Tac offerings. I suppose the answer should be that if a cover can stand some X temperature that’s higher than another, it wouldn’t be very useful if it didn’t contain it to a reasonable degree as well. A stainless steel cover would stand very high temperatures, but wouldn’t offer the user any more protection from the ill effects than the can itself. Thanks again. I guess I’ll just have to make a choice and take my chances. “Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools, because they have to say something.” — Plato
